Please Help Getting Weak looking at 4Runners :(

Please help
Have been doing my research on a new JGC Overland Diesel's
Unfortunately reading many mechanical complaints/issues etc.
Also dealers appear to have poor ratings on repair/service records in my area.

So (reluctantly), have been looking around at the Toyota 4Runners reviews/etc.

Please help me find my way back home
Any input would be appreciated

How about this the current 4runner is ugly stand there and look at the front of it and then ask yourself what were they thinking. The pathfinder has been ruined worse it has been turned into a minivan. The recent designers for toyota and nissan must be smoking dope and eating cantaloupe their current suvs are terrible looking.

Toyota is ****ing garbage. They are still stuck in the 90's tech wise in their vehicles. SUCH boring cars. They might be reliable but they are so because they lack innovation.

I wish they made their Highlander off-road worthy...

A family member was on the fence between a Pathfinder and a Jeep. She went Pathfinder. Took it for a spin and was really underwhelmed. Hideous interior and dash design, minimal features, sluggish pick up, and the body design, as mentioned above, looks like a minivan. A base model Laredo is infinitely nicer and offers way more bang for the buck.

Re: Please Help Getting Weak looking at 4Runners :(

Please remember that "bad dealer service departments" are not unique to FCA...dealers are independently run businesses and there always have been and always will be dealer service departments that are less than helpful. Many are excellent. My local dealer's service department is top-notch and just as good as the Toyota dealer down the street that I patronized for many years prior.

As to reported issues, yes, there have been some problems, but remember that on the Internet you will see more problems reported than "happy campers". It's the nature of humans to be that way. The percentage of vehicles that have issues relative to the total production is still small.

If you like the JGC...which is an awesome vehicle...and want the Ecodiesel. Buy one. You're not going to find a comparable vehicle with Toyota, at least in North America.

That's exactly what I noticed when I made the mistake of buying a 2014 4R Limited.

Toyotas are really good vehicles. But the 4Runner is so far behind the times. Go out and test drive one then go drive a GC...

The 4R vibrates and makes a sad noise when accelerates, that was my biggest issue. And the steering feels like you're piloting a semi.

Re: Please Help Getting Weak looking at 4Runners :(

Honestly, all you need to do is drive both. I did, and it is not even close.

As an aside, my parents have a '14 GC, and another relative has a '13 4Runner. Guess which one has had major issues, and which one has only needed a wire reconnected to fix bluetooth functionality.

I too was excited about the diesel GC, and was turned off by the issues the '14s had. But remember, the pentastar and hemi haven't really had those issues. And if you are really comparing apples to apples, you should only be looking at the pentastar GC and the 4runner. They don't even offer a v8 or diesel...

At the end of the day its your choice, just offering some thoughts and experiences. All I needed was an extended test drive. That, plus Jeep upping the v6 tow rating to 6200 lbs, and Toyota lowering the 4runner to 4700 lbs. (I need to tow a boat, otherwise I would still have my Lexus....)

I spent about 15 minutes test driving a 4 Runner. I'd highly recommend doing that before you invest emotionally in the vehicle. I knew after sitting in it and driving it that I could never own one.

I too was interested in a Toyota 4Runner. Sat in one for a few minutes. Was not comfortable and the interior / dash felt like it was current 10 years ago. What drew me to the vehicle was a long standing belief that Toyotas are well built and engineered but to be honest I have put about 300,000 miles on two Jeep Grand Cherokees and a Wrangler with very few issues. I am currently driving a Wrangler but I think my next car will be a Grand Cherokee because of a desire for comfort and high tech features.

Re: Please Help Getting Weak looking at 4Runners :(

I own a 2014 Overland EcoDiesel. I have ripped off the DEF injector in a puddle (and ordered DOM's plate the next day), and just had the Cat replaced this week.

Still, to this day, I have no regrets. The dealer/shop experience has been mixed, but I will say I have never had to argue about whether something was warranty or not, as others on this forum have. I have had no out of cost expenses for the issues, and they provided a rental when it was going to take them a week to get the injector.

Everything else has exceeded expectations.

As others are saying, go out and drive. Not just the Toyota, but an EcoDiesel, on the same day if you can. Then you will know...

Haha, this guy is my alter ego! Check out the link:

t4r.org: Considering purchasing a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

For several years I was dead set on purchasing a T4R. After that thread, I was convinced to buy an EcoDiesel Summit instead. I love this machine, and I would buy it again without a moment's hesitation.

Here's the deal: if I had given up the "it has literally everything I want, except maybe reliability" aspect of the Jeep and bought the T4R out of fear regarding reliability then I can't express how much rage I would have felt if the T4R ever had anything go wrong with it... even something as simple as a slow leak in a wheel.

Once I realized that, I decided I would buy the EcoDiesel and simply augment it with an 8 year/120k mile Chrysler MaxCare plan. In my mind I budgeted that as part of the purchase price (call it ~$2k), and it assuaged my remaining concerns.

I made the right choice for me. I say this even today... after picking up my Jeep that was in the shop all week to fix an extremely slow oil leak from the engine timing chain cover gaskets. Chrysler gave me a rental the whole time (a shitbox minivan; thanks for nothing, Enterprise).

In summary, I expected "reliability issues" from the Jeep, and overall it hasn't been a problem (based on my subjective criteria). Hell, if a few small oil spots on the garage floor didn't bother me much I could have just skipped this gasket fix. Anyway, yeah. You'll have to decide for yourself, but what I can say is that I *love* my EcoDiesel: I smile just thinking about it, and driving it is even better.

I'm glad I didn't let fear get the better of me.
