Popping noise from engine

Hi I have a 2014 grand cherokoee overland .
Recently I noticed when sitting in car with engine running in park I hear an odd popping coming from under hood. It's not loud and random like a pop pop pop them nothing then pop and so on . It's almost like air or something . Anyway kind of hard to explain. If I put it in drive i don't hear it or in reverse . In neutral and park i hear it. I don't always here it ? I can't say if it's always been there or not cause normally the radio is on or fan but since weather got nice and heat is off I happened to notice it oneday sitting in the car with radio off? What could this be? There are no warning lights on truck drives normal am oil level is good I just did the oil change ? Any thoughts?

I swear Im hearing the same thing on mine.

I came back from a drive and left the 2014 GC V6 running while I was unloading it, I swear Im hearing the same thing as you. I cant figure out where its coming from I kept thinking in the intake somewhere and its definitely not metal on metal sound its more plastic on plastic lite knocking or air popping sounding, subtle but noticable and not a steady rythem. more like XX----XXX --X ----XX --X----- XXXX --X --X- -XXX--- X --XX- -X (X's repersenting lite pop sound and dashes representing a pause .
Any ideas?
Did you ever find out what yours was?-

Re: Popping noise from engine

It could be the thermostat opening and closing to regulate engine temperature. If your not moving the engine gets hot fast and the cooling system has to work hard to maintain proper temps. Without a sound clip or vid it's hard to say?

Ill try and get a clip this AM,
It seems to come from middle or back of engine, its more noticable standing on driver side looking in to engine.

Re: Popping noise from engine

Yeah that's the sound pop pop pop pop' sometimes I find it's faint other times I can't hear it ! I'm not sure if it depends on temp outside ! The mechanic heard it and suggested to change water pump but when I took it to another dealer they couldn't hear it and thought the one that suggested changing the water pump was out to lunch . So it's still there I just can't figure it out? I was told if engine light not on not to worry ? One guy suggested the car has a fuel regulatory that makes a similar noise and it could be that ? It is quite odd and would love to go to a dealer and say this is what it is fix it but no one knows where to begin ? It sounds like air popping ? Or almost the sound you may here on a miss fire ? Very odd! Glad I'm not the only one hearing this now ! Hopefully a maybe some answers can be found here ?

Re: Popping noise from engine

So it's the V6 doing this? Ok, so I'm irrelevant on this unless I can chime in on an audio clip....good luck.

Re: Popping noise from engine

I made a clip of it buit its hard to hear. First you have to listen with decent speakers and try and tune out the injectors and other louder engine noises etc and just listen for the dull back ground thump/ pop/ "air echo" like sound that has no rhythm to it, it might even sound like me moving the camera. If you can pick it up then tune into it and replay a couple times you might get it. This might not work. Also there is a pc off the intake that starts clicking for periods of time then stops I used a stethoscope but you can put your hand on it and feel it also it runs for about a minute at a time, and I think it might influence the sound here is a picture of it also

Note, I dont know if "pop" is the best word to describe it, after you pick it up you will see what I mean it is a pop sound but not like a loud POP, its dull like air bubble echo or thump , definitely not a metal sound.
Ill try and do another video and see if its clearer if this doesnt work

Re: Popping noise from engine

Listened to it 3 times with HK speakers and eyes closed. Felt like I was in a seance waiting for "George" to talk to me.

But seriously, what I hear in the faint background is a knocking (maybe even light tapping) sound on a plenum/hollow chamber or a flutter valve opening and closing.

No idea what the hell it is but that's what I hear and it is random fo' shizzle!

Re: Popping noise from engine

The discripton on the noise matchs what I hear aswell although I haven't yet viewed the video ? Hopefully someone can shed some light as to what in the world this news is . I personally don't feel it's serious as my truck exhibits no driving issues or error codes as a result ? Hopefully some one will be able to tell us what it is and what to tell the dealership to look at ?
