When if I would have bought the same priced 4runner from toyota it would be worth 27k. Depreciation is by far the worst thing. Apart from that it's a great vehicle to drive.
Where did you get those awful numbers from? I have a '14 Altitude with 24,000 miles on it (No Nav, No Backup camera) and in good condition it's worth $23k.

My '14 Limited with 54K on it, Nav and ORA-I is worth about 24 in "very good". Mine has a a couple dings, so I lost a little for that.

Re: Potential JGC Buyer.. Are they really that bad?

I have a '14 Limited 4WD Hemi.

I got it in Aug '13, so I managed the issues that affected the early 14's.

I've done the 2 or 3 recalls (the sun visor wiring? I think? Reflashing the computer? something like that).

I've had one issue with the vehicle, the motor on my ELSD gave a light and was replaced under warranty. Other than that, it's been fine.

I love the vehicle, my wife loves riding in it. I love the air suspension.

21K miles on it.

I agree with others, many of the "reliability" issue flagged by CR have to do with the Infotainment system, and these issues plague everybody right now as the manufacturers continue Forrest Gump their way through interface design, and system integration.

But in the end, the cars start and get you from point a to point b safely as they're supposed to. Yea, it's annoying when the radio goes stupid on you (and it's "lost" my phone once or twice), but as a vehicle, a drivetrain with seats, they work great.

Nope, they really aren't that bad,on the fit, finish, reliability and no issues EVER with my 2011 JGC (bought new so knew the vehicle) I purchased my 2015, I have made observations that I HAVE had a glitchy screen and has been a visitor to the Dealership 3 times for it,everything else has been faultless and IMHO I have had no problems with the infotainment system since(third time the screen was replaced),as other people have noted, few shout the praises online, but most will complain about a problem, that is true of any vehicle. The fit and finish on mine is the quality I would expect and appreciate.$ for $ I honestly think these vehicles are value for money. No one can sway your final choice, all I can offer,I am a happy, long term,4x Jeep owner.Good luck on your new purchase and whatever you buy, enjoy it.

Re: Potential JGC Buyer.. Are they really that bad?

My 15 has been perfect thus far and I would recommend it to anyone. There really is no comparable vehicle on the market today that combines the balance of utility, capability, and road manners of the GC for the money. I love Rovers but they are quite a bit more expensive than the GC and I would argue are less reliable. I looked at a 4Runner and wanted to like it, but it just doesn't offer the balance the Jeep has. The 4Runner uses a rudimentary part time 4WD sytem, 5 speed automatic, wheezy engine, and somewhat cheap feeling materials. Some may complain about the resale of the Jeep, but if you shop around enough you can get major money off MSRP (try that with a 4Runner) which certainly makes a difference. I think I got a little over $7500 off MSRP when I bought mine.

Agreed, while I feel the UConnect system and GPS could use some improvement, the parts that matter when driving are great. It's still not as smooth going between 1-2 and 2-1 as I'd like, but based on the improvements they'd made since 2014, I have no doubt they'll sort that out eventually since it appears to be a software-fixable issue.

I was down to the Ford Explorer and the Jeep GC and I chose the Jeep because the Ford doesn't have a real low range mode anymore.

I had considered getting a Wrangler because I like manual transmission vehicles, but the value for the dollar wasn't there. The Wranglers are too expensive for how primitive they are in comparison.

The GC with the paddle shifters at least gets me close to a manual transmission vehicle when I want to shift manually - which is especially key in the winter when I like to engine brake as much as possible in icy conditions.

Not OP obviously but my dealer gives loaners out like candy. But I have the feeling this is due to the group that owns the dealership, Fields Jeep. They give you the Fields experience where even staying at the dealer is amazing experience, even for the gf who hates dealerships. They offer free ice cream, free coffee, doughnuts, there is a gold video game you can play. Place is really first class and I highly recommend it. Not to mention how well they value customer loyalty (look at my other posts about the '14 diesel problems I had). Will be buying from them in a few years when I get another JGC and the gf (soon to be wife) gets a Cherokee.

Re: Potential JGC Buyer.. Are they really that bad?

60000 relatively trouble free miles on mine. #2 Fuel injector failed under the 3/36 warranty, couple of free flashes for the DTCM to improve shifting and some other firmware revisions then the fuel pump relay recall. Couldn't love the Jeep more.
Any car nowadays will have several software/ firmware updates after you buy it.
Be happy we don't have the MS Sync like Ford does. Talk about fail. My old company car had it.
To the OP: You have a small, make that very small, slice of the customer base here. Add that to the fact that more people join forums to air complaints than join to lay praise. Good luck on your decision.

The depreciation on SUV's is brutal its not just Jeep, if you really want to see painful depreciation look at the Audi Q5/SQ5 trade in value at 2 years ouch!

It's all about the drive train. 4WD adds complications a 2WD vehicle doesn't have. Plus, there's a perception that they take more of a beating verses the average baby hauler.

That may be the perception, but my dealer highly advised not to buy a 2wd model. He said resale is worse than terrible on 2wd... Jeep and 4x4 are synonymous. Said would get even less at sale or trade in as they can hardly move 2wd Jeeps. But I am in the snowy Midwest....may not be as true in Fl or southern CA.

This is C/D's review of putting 40K miles on a 2011 JGC. Not too bad according to them...
