Potential JGC Buyer.. Are they really that bad?

Hello Everyone!

I am in the market for a new vehicle, and my search keeps leading me to the JGC. The Durango was my first choice, but that model is now in limbo.

My main reason for choosing the JGC is the combination of utility, Hemi V8, and comfort. I wouldn't mind something larger, but I have older folks who would have trouble getting in for a ride.

So, The truck always gets glowing reviews, but the reliability ratings and user experiences seem terrible. I know there are a lot of fans here, but I have to ask: Are they really that bad?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Potential JGC Buyer.. Are they really that bad?

No. They arent.

The main reviews youre going to read are always going to be negative. Yes on Jeepgarage youre going to hear both sides of the tale, but mainly people go on the internet to complain.

If you want the most reliable jeep, a 2016 Jeep GC with the proven V8 should give you minimal amounts of issues. The transmission in it has been a problem free design in comparison to the V6. If your choice is between the Jeep and the Durango, go with the Jeep. Its a higher quality vehicle in both materials and looks.

Re: Potential JGC Buyer.. Are they really that bad?

Reliability ratings seem to be heavily impacted by uconnect (entertainment system) glitches and the diesel emissions systems. And as suggested above, the v6 trans has had a few issues. The v8 should be fairly bullet proof.

Re: Potential JGC Buyer.. Are they really that bad?

Heck no they aren't bad. The new Grand Cherokees are great!
I am actually on my third WK2. 2012 Overland V6, 2014 Summit V8, and now a 2015 High Altitude V6. They have all been excellent vehicles. Dunno why you ask about them being "are they really that bad".
User Benn0 above stated that uconnect issues may be a reason....that's actually the first I have ever heard of that and I'm online daily looking up Grand Cherokee stuff. Uconnect is actually one of the, if not the highest rated system on the market. It's excellent. Early 2014s had some electrical gremlins, and some of the V6 transmissions had some problems, but I can't speak from experience, the tranny in my '15 V6 is great!

Might be referring to the kl? It is plagued with tranny problems
Anyway get the air suspension. I use it to lower the jeep close to the ground to load up my parents

There was some discussion about this in the CR reliability rankings thread:
Jeep reliability dead last in Consumer Reports

There is a video linked in there where the CR staff who compiled the report talk about infotainment glitches pulling down the GC ranking, along with emissions systems.

There have been a heap of fixes for HVAC and radio enhancements released:

2014 SRT here. Rolled over 12k today, only issues I've had were taken care of via TSB. Limited experience at the moment tho.

Re: Potential JGC Buyer.. Are they really that bad?

I'm in a 2014 Limited V6, coming up on 54,000. Yeah, I've had every recall done since I have an early production 2014 (Feb. 2013 build), and I had some Uconnect glitches in the beginning, but it's solid now. I didn't have any problems with the transmission, so can't speak to that. The only "problem" I've had with mine is it's been through 3 sunroof motors and 3 controllers. No other issues with anything else.

While I'll still say I love my 2014 Limited, it has given me plenty of reasons to hate it. 3 recalls, new water pump, new CV joint boots, seat memory issues, and the latest are a really annoying rattle in the rear and a coolant leak both of which the dealer can't figure out yet. Everything has been covered under warranty, but I am getting sick of the trips to the dealer.

My only advice is stay away from the 2014 models, particularly the earlier builds, and depending on how long you plan to keep it, get an extended warranty.

Still love the looks, size, towing and off road capability, etc. You aren't crazy being a little concerned about the reliability though.

Re: Potential JGC Buyer.. Are they really that bad?

Nope, they are not "that bad". Have there been some elevated instances of issues, such as with early MY14 V6 vehicles? Yes. Have there been electronics issues like every other current generation on the road? Yes. But when you consider that 800-900 of them come out of the Jefferson North factory per day and every single one of them is sold, that's a lot of JGCs on the road.

Mine hasn't been perfect, but it's been the nicest vehicle I've ever owned. And my MaxCare extended service contract will deal with anything that comes along while I'm still driving it.

Re: Potential JGC Buyer.. Are they really that bad?

To the OP

Jeep is always bashed in many of the consumer rags as being undendable.
I have an 02WJ and it has been awesome.

You will always get internet amplification per negative experience, guess people feel better when they blow off steam.

I am coming up on a yr of ownership of a 15 Hemi Overland. Only issue I had was a couple of trim pieces in the hatch area didnt line up, dealer order all new 1/4 trim and hatch trim and replaced. they also did a firmware update for the U-connect.

Other than that is has been excellent! I keep my cars 20+ yrs so I opted for the maxcare.

I would seriously recommend you do due diligence on the dealer you buy from, make sure they have a good service department, customer service of some dealers seems to be the main gripe I see here. I am lucky because I am friends with the local CDJR store and know the owner, his son(sold me the Jeep), service manager, and a couple techs who I have work on my cars when I dont feel like it

My wife loves her Jeep and I would buy another, although I hope to buy an SRT Challenger next year to add to the fleet.

Re: Potential JGC Buyer.. Are they really that bad?

Like all other vehicles, getting a good one vs getting a lemon is often hit or miss.

My 2012 Overland was pretty close to being a lemon. There were several issues requiring a trip to the dealership.

But so far, my 2015 Overland has been great. No major issues & the 1 TSB related to the UConnect system security was taken care of by using the USB stick FCA mailed to the owners.

So it really depends.
