The picture of the shifter in this article bears no resemblance to ours.

Having said that, this does bring up a pet peeve I have with the transmission: It's an electronic shifter. So why does it bark at me when I try to turn the car off when it's not in park? Why wouldn't it just put itself in park when I hit the run button, then shut off?

While not something that happens often, I have had times where I've stopped somewhere expecting to pull away soon after, but end up sitting longer than I originally planned. When I stopped, I didn't bother to put it in park, but when I realize I'm not leaving right away, I might decide to turn the engine off. That's when I here "ding" and it tells me I'm not in Park. It's not that I don't know to put it in Park, it's that I forgot I didn't shift to Park when I thought I wasn't going to be sitting very long.

OK, instead of telling me to put it in Park, just do it and shut off. Why take the risk I might be one of those people that's going to hop out without checking things? I'm not, but the car doesn't know that...

I've owned over 30 new vehicles in the last 30 years, and my '14 GC was the only car I ever got out of while it was in reverse (I thought it was in park). With over a half a million miles and no accidents, I am certainly not a poorly designed driver...

That's actually Park, Reverse, Neutral, Drive/Sport... to be excessively picky about it.

If your Uconnect screen is on, drivers with a pulse might ask themselves why they can see behind them when allegedly in Park...

I'm not as much surprised by the GC being looked at, but that this also affects the Audi and nobody is resurrecting the old issue from Quattro days where new/unfamiliar drivers got the gas pedal and brake confused.

That shifter and transmission is used on a lot of eurobarges--but then in many european countries you have to prove that you have at least TWO functioning neurons before you can get a drivers license.

Park to Drive --- easy.
Drive to Park --- easy.
Park to reverse --- easy.
Drive to reverse --- not as easy as can select neutral by mistake if not paying attention but again it is in neutral so not like it is in gear.

Excellent point. I would also bet this could be far cheaper to implement than having to build in some sort of detent/indicator, warning, etc. of the mechanical variety.

I could claim it is because vehicle manufacturers are fairly new at designing computer user interfaces--except that the computer manufacturers still pretty much suck at not going with the "you're a damn computer, you figure it out and take the logical action" methodology.

Unfortunately that still leaves the use case where the driver intentionally leaves the vehicle running but doesn't bother to look to see if it is in reverse or park.

I find the lever awkward, especially when going from drive to reverse. I could easily see how people could mistakenly select R instead of P.

Has anyone tried rocking the Jeep from D to R and back to D (several times) after getting stuck, I have and it was not easy getting back to R each time.

Re: Preliminary investigation into just over 400,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees

This shifter is vague, but it does have a fail safe feature. I tried to turn it off today while I was in neutral, and it wouldn't shut down. I'm not sure how people are getting run over when they exit the car and it's not in park, unless they keep the engine running. When I get out, I always set the parking brake, which a lot of people don't do. When I exit my cars, I always shut them down. I almost always put the car in park when anyone else exits or enters, to avoid an accident in having the car move while someone is around it. To put the car in Park, I just push it forward and hold it, and then visually check the range indicator to be sure it's in park. You can't put it in park by feel, like my other cars. It was confusing at first, but after a a few months, I almost always get it in the right range by feel, and I know to to do a visual check of the range indicator just to be sure.

Mercedes uses a stalk on the steering column. Jeep's problem is that they made it look just like mechanical PRNDL console unit drivers have had for decades. The mechanical unit position reflects what gear it is in so one knows by feel where they are as well as by a quick glance. (think race car drivers and pilots preferring dials with needles rather than digital read out; Its the position stupid")The Jeep unit returns to center with each move so position recognition doesn't work. Jeep also has no firm detentes when it moves so you can't feel things like 2 clicks from drive is reverse, and 3 is park. Jeep makes you stop and look at it. The mechanical units skied off of the old floor mounted 4 speed when you feel position and don't have to look.

Mercedes stalk is considered to be a factor in the ML that was hit by a train outside New York. It's non standard format was a point of confusion in a panic situation resulting in several deaths.

Yea, this is BS. Granted I have to look at the IP to know I'm in park, rev or drive, our BMW X5 will put it in park if I shut the vehicle off. As you said, its electronic, so the ECM should do it for me.

These accidents aren't folks putting it in Park and the thing rolling, it's people not paying attention.
