Problems to look for when buying a used 2014 Overland

Hi All,

I'm currently in the process of shopping around for a used 2014 Overland with the hemi and I'm wondering what are the common problems for this model/trim that I should look for when shopping. I've read through the troubleshooting section, but haven't really seen any common problems.

I know it's common to have transmission problems for the V6, is this true for the hemi as well?

Any other well known problems that I should look for?

Make sure it has a build date later than august 2013
and has all the flashes and recalls done.

Ah, yes! That's because of the updated ACC right?

V8 transmission is built by ZF in Germany while the V6 is built by Chrysler. There have been far fewer issues with the V8 transmission.

It's all a crapshoot as to what you'll get.

My 2014 V8 4x4 was built in March 2014 and runs GREAT! Enjoy.

Re: Problems to look for when buying a used 2014 Overland

My 2014 was built in March 2013. It has a little over 27k on the clock. Besides all of the reflashes and such, my only issue has been to replace the wheel bearing hub assembly.

I've had no issues with the transmission and really love the truck. So happy with the Overland V8. Mine is Black Forest Pearl and you really don't see the color that often.

The leather dash is worth a closer look.

July 22, 2013 is the last build date with the ACC that does not have stop-n-go so if this feature is important you need a build date of July 23, 2013 or later. The Built Date is month and year it rolled off line and is in upper left of sticker on inside of driver door edge. The actual day that "sets" the features is the MMDDHH in the lower right corner of same sticker. The HH is the hour in military time.

If buying from a dealer have them print out the STAR history, if any, on the VIN which will identify problems elevated to the STAR tech center. As others have said, no vehicle is perfect but the later in the build run the better. They were built late Jan '13 thru late July '14.

Regarding the trannies. It's probably about 3 (V6) to 1 (V8/Diesel) for problem ratio but I truly believe overall tranny problems are very much in the minority of all Jeep owners' experiences. Keep in mind, we forum folks are the vocal ones. Forums are a generally negatively skewed viewed on quantity of problems, IMHO. That said, if you were on the fence between a V6 and a V8/Diesel then I personally would give the V8/Diesel an extra vote per se due to the fewer issues reported. The issue is that while the ZF 8HP70 in the V8/Diesel is 100% non-modified mechanically for or by Chrysler from ZF the 845RE is actually the ZF 8HP45 that is manufactured by Chrysler under license from ZF BUT mechanically modified by Chrysler to "better handle our torque requirements...". Both have Chrysler created programming for the application, which is why there are "re-flash" TSB's etc.. to address reported problems, but with the V6 845RE being the only one that has been mechanically modified by Chrysler AND it being the one getting more complaints it stands to reason that the mechanical mods have something to do with it. Just my 20 cents.

Good luck.
