Re: Purchase Advice Requested - V6 vs. ecodiesel

I think Hemispin did a good job laying this all out. One thing I would add is when you are looking at the diesel don't become to fixated on the mileage numbers always be sure to check the price of diesel fuel vs gasoline where you will be buying it most. diesel vs gas price ratios can swing wildly depending on what part of the country you live in. where I live its typically about 25% higher for diesel but in other parts of the country diesel can be cheaper than gas. Besure to factor that in as it can be a plus or a minus depending where you live and possibly sway your engine choice one way or the other. I do about 17-18 in mixed driving with the Hemi, similar to what Hemispin is getting. sounds like you are going to be doing a lot of bumper to bumper sitting in traffic, just resign your self to the fact that your mileage numbers are going to be low pushing a 5200lb suv around in that regardless of engine with hemi of course being the worst. Run the numbers for your area and see what you come up with for diesel vs hemi, its a different right answer for everyone's different situation.

On a side note I did just fill up for $1.55 a gallon at shell the giant points took $.50 off so $1.05 a gallon so fill up from near empty was about $21. These prices wont last enjoy them while you can, the Arabs will bring the prices back up before too long.

You said you were looking at a 2014 diesel. Many of them have had problems with the emissions equipment in the exhaust. Seems like most have been fixed but if you happen to find a used one with low miles there's a chance it hasn't been fixed yet. The fix is an updated design for the cat with corresponding software update, I believe. The 2015's haven't had any problems with this because they all have the better hardware already. Something to think about and check on if you find a 2014.
Also have to factor in fuel filter changes every 30k miles and adding DEF exhaust fluid, About $12 at walmart every 5k miles. I easily get 29 mpg highway and even when stuck in stop and go traffic on rt 3, 93, 495, it still easily stays above 20. In fact my ave. mileage has actually gone up sometimes while creeping along in traffic. Diesel's are great...

Appreciate your input. My TDI sportwagen gets like 35 (tuned) on 3, 95 and 495 so it's great to have some local input. Given the VW diesel gate I think my decision will be to wait a year (since mine has another year left under warranty) and pick up a low mileage 15 diesel. Worst case with emission issues I'll dump the DPF and tune it. Thanks everyone!
