Thumbs up Purchase Advice Requested - V6 vs. ecodiesel

Hi All:
Iím looking for help on my next vehicle purchase decision. Iíve owned jeeps in the past (2000 XJ lifted, 2007 WK with the terrible 3.7) but currently own a 2011 Jetta Sportwagen TDI. Iíve got about 82k miles on my TDI and donít want to keep it out of warranty. I live 30 miles south of Boston and commute into the city or to clients around the city every day Ė so basically I sit in traffic for between 1 Ė 1.5hrs each way per day. I also often do long trips to clients across New England so 3-4 hr trips are common. I put about 22k miles a year on my car. Iím looking to purchase a WK2 but debating between the Pentastar V6 and the 3.0 ecodiesel. I love diesels (my TDI is tuned and a joy to drive) but Iíve experienced a ton of issues with the complex emissions systems that the EPA requires. Iíve already replaced my DPF & EGR once under warranty (at 72k miles). Iím looking to keep this next vehicle to 150k miles and looking to keep my total monthly costs (fuel + payment) below $650 a month. After running the numbers both a 2014 ecodiesel limited and a 2014 V6 limited will get me there. Iíve done a bunch of reading on this site but still have questions.

So here are my questions:
  • How are the dealer service techs with the diesels? On the VW side dealers are notoriously bad with diesels (which is weird given the history of the TDI).
  • How is the MPG in stop and go/heavy city driving in both the V6 and ecodiesel?
  • Are the service/maintenance requirements much more expensive on the ecodiesel?
  • How are the DPF & EGR systems on the ecodiesel?
  • Any suggestions on good extended warrantyís for used GCs?
  • Is there anything else I should consider about either of these models?

Thank you all in advance for your input!

Also should I even consider the Hemi? I had one back in 2003 in my Ram 2500 QC 4x4 and loved it but the gas killed me. Do the new ones shut down to 4 cyl in heavy stop & go traffic? Mine loved gas but was very reliable.

i love the hemi, but i have a 10mi commute to work, half highway then the rest of it is 35mph, i avg 13.5mpg FWIW. The ECO rarely turns on in stop go, its mainly when I'm cruising on the highway. . .not uphill. if that scares you go v6 or ecodiesel. the wk2 is a heavy one, like a tank

Yes, the MDS system reduces to 4 cylinder operation under light loads and the Hemi is great with the new 8 speed. However, if your main criteria is fuel economy, obviously the V6 and diesel will be noticeably better. Expect 16-17 MPG's overall in mixed driving with the V8.

Re: Purchase Advice Requested - V6 vs. ecodiesel

We get about 20 mpg with the gas V6 in mixed suburban driving, and about 24 on the highway, cruising at 60-80 depending on road conditions. I thought about getting the diesel, but I decided against it because of issues I have read about with clogging of the soot trap filter if you don't drive enough on the highway. Since you do a good bit of highway driving, that probably won't be an issue. Then there's the cost of diesel fuel. In N/VA in the winter, diesel is much more than regular gas. The extra cost of the diesel wiped out most of the fuel savings. Also, you can get an unlimited time/unlimited mileage warrant on the gas engine, but for the diesel, I think it's limited to 70k miles. I plan to keep this JGC for a very long time and it's nice to know I won't have to pay lot for repairs in the future.

Re: Purchase Advice Requested - V6 vs. ecodiesel

Look at the cost of the extended warranties. The fact that the diesel warranty costs more tells the story I needed to hear. I have the V6 and am very happy. Performance and fuel economy are fine for my needs. I don't tow anything.

Re: Purchase Advice Requested - V6 vs. ecodiesel

I just re-read your mileage request. I live in Orange County CA and the majority of the miles on my Jeep are in rush hour stop and go traffic. I am getting 18+ MPG under those conditions. I have been tracking my fuel economy since day 1.

Re: Purchase Advice Requested - V6 vs. ecodiesel

I honestly think your decision comes down to personal preference and personal justification for the extra purchase and maintenance cost of the EcoDiesel engine over the V6. Both are good choices. Had the EcoDiesel been available when I was purchasing, I would have seriously considered it because in addition to the desire for good fuel economy (like most folks) I also have a towing need.

Re: Purchase Advice Requested - V6 vs. ecodiesel

The engine choice comes down to personal preferences. Each engine offers its own set of advantages and downsides.

The gas V6: It's the least expensive option, and it gets good fuel economy. It also has issues with the cylinder heads in some cases. The gas V6 is paired with the weaker 8 speed trans that also has some reported issues. This is the least desirable package for towing, although many people are satisfied with it for towing lighter loads.

The Hemi V8: Plenty of power, great sound, costs a bit more over the V6, paired with the more durable 8 speed transmission. Biggest downside is lower fuel economy. I average 16-17 with 32" BFG K/O2 tires. I get 20 mpg on road trips. Very simple engine lends itself to lower repair and maintenance bills and has proven to be be very reliable over time. Good setup for towing.

The diesel V6: Best overall fuel economy, good setup for towing, has the better 8 speed transmission. Tons of low-RPM torque. Downsides include highest up-front cost, including requirement to be packaged with the tech package (last time I checked). Also be aware of somewhat questionable reliability, ~$100 oil changes (due to special oil requirement and expensive filter), and some reports of emissions issues, and you have to purchase DEF fluid (not a huge expense).

In my case, the Hemi was the best choice for me. The fuel economy isn't too bad. For a 5000 pound 4x4 rig with 360 HP on 32 inch tires, I can't complain. There are plenty of other choices out there is fuel economy is important to you. I had the water pump replaced under warranty at about 43k miles after the cooling systems showed a leak during a pressure test. Other than that it's been trouble-free.

Take some time to figure out what is most important to you.

Re: Purchase Advice Requested - V6 vs. ecodiesel

Thank you all for your input. I drove the V6 and think it is too weak for my tastes. Good engine (compared to my wife's '14 Acadia) but I know is get bored of it. Now I'm down to the ecodiesel and hemi. I'm leaning towards the ecodiesel. Now just need to drive the Eco and the hemi. Also need to figure out what to do with my TDI. They are talking about a possible buy back for older 2.0 diesels without the urea system (which is the model I have) but I just couldn't believe that VW would do that (or give me FMV for it)
