Purchase decision help requested (please!)
Iím looking for some help planning a purchase of a WK2. Iíve owned jeeps before (2000 XJ lifted & 2007 WK) but Iím currently driving a 2011 Jetta Sportwagen TDI (diesel). I love my TDI but it currently has 82k miles on it and Iíd like to get rid of it before my warranty expires at 100k miles (approx. a year from now). Iím also looking to get back into an SUV as I miss having 4wd here in Massachusetts.
My requirements are fairly simple Ė must have low & high range 4wd, leather, sunroof and a trailer hitch. I have no plans for towing but would like to get a small utility trailer. Ideally Iíd like to spend less than $33k and donít want to purchase anything older than a 2013.
I like to modify my vehicles and this is where I need help. I also spend a significant amount of time in my car on a weekly basis traveling for work. I travel between 20 Ė 25k miles a year in congested Boston traffic, so often many hours in stop and go traffic. There are plenty of long range highway trips too. I love the look of the SRT8 but canít afford one but I also like the look of mildly lifted jeeps with BFG All Terrains. So here are a couple of things Iím thinking:
1) Ideally it would be great to have best of both worlds Ė run SRT reps (or similar) wheels during the summer and then switch to a set of BFG All Terrains during the winter. Iíve read that you can trick the QL system to lower the WK2 a bit but havenít seen anything about tricking it to lift a couple inches. Anyone tried this? If I canít will it look stupid running SRT reps on stock suspension? Is the QL system reliable (or worth it for that matter)?
2) Iím debating between the Pentastar and the EcoDiesel. I have a thing for diesels but I do want to keep this jeep for a long time (5 years ~150k miles). Iíve learned how complex these systems are with my TDI (and having to replace the DPF at 72k miles). I also know how much fun they are to drive. I have a great relationship with my VW dealer and they are fantastic when it comes to servicing my TDI. How are the jeep dealers with the ecodiesel? Anything I should consider about the ecodiesel? I know I could potentially dump the emissions systems and tune it but Iím not sure how I feel about that.
3) Iím not considering the Hemi (although I had one in my 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 QC and loved it) due to fuel costs. Iíve read people average 15mpg.
4) Any other things to consider? Iím doing as much reading as I can but any inputs would be great.
I appreciate your input and your time with this.
