Question about switching from 20" to 18" for the winter

I have a few quick questions about switching from the stock 20" Overland rims to the 18" rugged off-road Mopar rims (the blacked out ones that a few members have here).

Will there be any problem with switching from 20 to 18 with the Quadra-lift?

And what will the new tire size be so I can order them online since my dealer has never ordered in Bridgestone Blizzak before and I can get them cheaper online. I know the stock 20's are 265/50/20 so would the 18's be 265/50/18 ?

Also if there is anyone running this setup that has any input on if they were happy with the switch for the winter or not that would be great too.

Tirerack will show you the OEM tire sizes, tell the system is a limited, that will get you the 18 inch size. Some have run a size larger without issue.

The OEM 20 and 18 inch tires both have nearly the same diameter, so there is no QL issue.

Lots of reviews arround, if you need a dedicated no compromise snow/ice/low themperature tire, the blizzaks are about as good as you can get. If you spend most of your time on hard pavement at highway speeds and rarely dipping below 30 F, you will kill the blizzaks pretty fast, a different snow or AT tire may be better for you.

Thanks, I have used Blizzaks in the past and prefer them over anything else I have used. I live on the east coast of Canada and come November it will never be above 30F till march at the earliest. I got the Jeep at the end of January and it was the first time I have ever run all seasons and not a dedicated winter tire and thought the all seasons that come with the jeep are terrible. We get lots of wet snow and ice and the tires just can't handle it.

No problems at all. I have the 20" rims on now, and in the winter I swap over to an 18" wheelset (Blizzak DM-V1). Outside diameter is just about identical (there's a grand total of one revolution per mile difference between the 265/50R-20 and 265/60R-18 sizes).

The tire size you want is 265/60R-18. If you go with a 50 series as in your post, the outside diameter will be quite different.

I had the Hankook iPikes on my Magnum R/T and they were incredible and very reasonable.

Just curious why you switch to 18 inch wheels in winter since the Blizzak DMV-1 comes in the 20 inch size (which I bought).

The reason I am switching is a few reasons.

1) 18" tires are cheaper than 20" tires. And I tend to get less life out of winters than I do summers.

2) Curbs, the only time I have ever scraped a curb was in the winter. I want that extra 2 inches of rubber in the winter to keep my 20's looking nicer for summer.

I have 18" Blizzaks for the winter. I bought the package from Tire Rack, wheels, tires, sensors all Road Force ballanced. The 18" tires take 33 psi compared to the 20's at 36 psi.
I find the Blizzaks less compliant than the Forteras but of course with far better grip in the cold.

All are reasons why I went to 18".

The 20s are more expensive at every turn, both for tires and rims. The 20s are more vulnerable to damage from the potholes that tend to develop in winter and to the curbs that you tend not to be able to see under the snow.

Generally, while the 20s are a bit sharper in terms of handling, I'm still not sold on them being the best choice for a SUV; I prefer the looks of the 18s, and if I could swap my 20s even up for a set of those black Mopars with TPMS sensors, I'd be on that like white on rice.

Someone already gave you the correct size but here's the lowdown on tire sizes:

The first number is the width of the tire in mm (265mm).

The second number is the height of the sidewall, represented as a percentage of the width (50 = 50% of 265).

To figure out a tire's diameter, convert the sidewall mm to inches, multiply by 2 and add the rim size.

265 * .50 = 132.5 mm
132.5 mm / 25.4 (25.4 mm to an inch) = 5.21 in
5.21 * 2 + 20 = 30.43
5.21 * 2 + 18 = 28.43

265 * .60 = 159 mm
159 mm / 25.4 = 6.25 in
6.25 * 2 + 18 = 30.51

265/50R20 is about 30.5 inches tall
265/60R18 is about 30.5 inches tall
but
265/50R18 is only 28.5 inches tall
