Question about Tread Lightly

Hi,

I was curious about how Tread Lightly actually works. What I do know is that once you are a member, you automatically get 1% below invoice. What I don't know is how this actually works. Does the dealer get a check from Tread Lightly? If so, how much does he actually get? The difference between 1% below invoice and MSRP? I can't imagine that but I simply don't know.

The reason why I'm asking is that I'm aiming for 4% below invoice as price on my next Summit and I was curious if signing up for Tread Lightly would make this easier to achieve.

I just want to be "covered" in case the dealership tries to tell me stories like "we're already losing money by participating in the Tread Lightly program" etc.

Thanks in advance, folks!

If you're looking to buy soon, just order from Koons Jeep (DC buyer's group) and take the Amtrak Autotrain back....it's fun! Or have it shipped to you.

Thanks for your input, Dan!

I'm planning on a late October delivery (so it's going to be a MY15) and I'm heading to my local dealer to find out what he's willing to offer and when I'd have to place the order.

If they are not willing to offer an acceptable price, I might just do what you suggested (I bought vehicles out of State before in order to get the best price).

Re: Question about Tread Lightly

No, Tread Lightly doesn't give anything to the dealer. By becoming a Tread Lightly member you become eligible to receive the Chrysler Affiliate discount of 1% off invoice.

I just got my membership packet the other day. There is an 800 number you call with your membership number and they give you a control number which you give to the dealer. When I spoke to Mark with the Texas group buy he said I needed to be a member for at least six weeks by the time I go pick up the car. So I recommend becoming a member early just in case.

Actually I recommend becoming a member whether or not you take advantage of the discount. I signed up because I had to in order to get the best price, but once I looked into what that group is all about I was happy to give them my money. They promote responsible use of outdoor resources (trails, waterways, etc) to ensure that said resources remain available for generations to come. Who could be against that?

Re: Question about Tread Lightly

^^^ WOW great photo Rumline.

The Texas group buy is supposed to apply to 2015 too.....Houston may be closer. Compare the deals...they are almost the same. Nader (at DC dealership) said about 10 days ago he didn't know if management would continue the program into 2015 or not, so will see.

As a charter member and having served on the national board twice, I appreciate rumline's comments. The TL! mission goes far beyond a discount.

Re: Question about Tread Lightly

Tread Lightly works. I have used it when purchasing my 14' Overland. Talk to the dealer for 4% below invoice and after that I've told him about additional 1% under invoice from TL. He did not know anything about it. I have send him more details and my control number and he checked with Chrysler and has accepted it. So my total discount was 5% under invoice. It is like employe discount, covered by Chrysler. TL has other great discounts on outdoor gear and tires, so definitely pays off.

Re: Question about Tread Lightly

Is the TL $100 membership level one you have to renew yearly to keep it?

Re: Question about Tread Lightly

$100 membership is required for chrysler discount. I think with $100 yearly membership you can use discount twice (two different #'s). If you do not renew it you can't use more discounts the following year.

See, this is what I meant when I was talking about "compensation for the dealer". Technically, the dealership might not get any money when TL is applied - but somebody (Chrysler?) is obviously somehow compensating the dealer for the 1% below invoice price (or does "Affiliate discount" perhaps mean that the dealer doesn't have to pay as much to Chrysler to obtain the vehicle in the first place?). I'd still like to know how exactly this works and who is compensating whom and by how much.

When I visited my local dealer today, they strongly advised that I should sign up for TL in order to get the best price possible - so it seems that this program does indeed play a significant role.

Maybe I'm completely off - but if a TL-member like DSI jeep is able to receive a lower price on top of the 4% off invoice just because of the TL-discount, doesn't that mean that the dealer either has to pay less for the vehicle to Chrysler OR gets a compensation from Chrysler due to TL? Since the agreed on purchase-price was already far below 1% off invoice, DSI jeep's case is a clear indicator to me that there is either less money flowing from the dealer to Chrysler or some money flowing from Chrysler to the dealer if TL is involved.

Re: Question about Tread Lightly

It is not very important who pays for it as soon as it is not me. At the end of the day Chrysler and dealer are still making money. I am sure for sponsoring TL they are getting tax break or else. Most important is to make your best deal with the dealer and then apply the TL discount. My Jeep was special order so dealer has had more room to negotiate probably due to the fact that truck left his lot very next day after arriving there. They are getting hold back, advertising $ and much more. Friend of mine works for Chrysler and he has 10% employe discount off invoice, so you can imagine what the profit margin is for Chrysler......
