Question from Potential Buyer

Hi all I am new to the forums and I an thinking of buying a 2014 GC Limited with the 8.4 UConnect system. I test drove it yesterday and it was great I really liked it and the UConnect system. Then I got home and started reading more reviews and there are some real horror stories out there. Tranny issues Uconnect crashing and leaving the vehicle with no controls. I am curious if the majority of these bugs have been worked out. The vehicle I tested was only 10 days on the lot I did not see a manufacture date because I was not checking. Any words of wisdom for me? What am I getting into if I choose to buy?

Hey Jim! Welcome to he forum. I just picked up my first ever Grand Cherokee a few days ago. Like you, I was very worried about the issues I might run into because of everything I had read on the forums. Luckily I have not experienced any of them. It seems as though everything has been worked out. So far I am loving my Jeep. Just make sure yours is a very new build date and I think your chances of having an issue will be very slim. I ordered mine from the factory so I could be sure to have the newest build available.

Re: Question from Potential Buyer

Welcome to the Jeep Garage.

If you kept track as you read the forum there were a lot (a real lot) of minor problems. And, there were a few (only a few) horror stories.

Mine is an early build, already over a year old. It has never left me stranded, never leaked anything, over heated, or run out of oil. The only mechanical problem was a bad wheel bearing. There were a number of software flashes needed to correct some issues, and a few issues still exist.

Can you imagine having to press the shuffle button every time you start the car and choose SD card as a source.

Or, what about the heat getting too hot and having to open a window or vent the sunroof.

And, what about having to press the button on the fob four times instead of two to open the hatch. That got a lot of press here.

Overall, the '14 GC is a good choice, IMHO, that has had some annoying growing pains. Not everything is solved just yet, but mostly minor annoyances.

If you buy the one you drove, just ask the dealer to be sure to do any updates that are pending, if any. They are supposed to do that as part of the prep, but a gentle reminder wouldn't hurt.

And most of all --- Post Pictures --- when you get it.

Re: Question from Potential Buyer

Hi and welcome. A lot of the problems you have read about have been worked out for MOST. Some other issues have come up and there is a new recall looming, according to some other posters. That said, I have had my vehicle since August (built in May) and I love it. The UConnect issues were fixed with the newest update and I was able to do the update myself by downloading it from the UConnect website. Like the other poster said, get the newest build you can and you shouldn't have the same issues you have been reading about. Unfortunately, and this is true of any car, that is no guarantee that you won't experience something new.

Re: Question from Potential Buyer

I think, for the most part uConnect issues seem to be worked out...the issues we seem to be seeing now are more along the lines of production errors, etc.

I personally would not worry about the uConnect at this point.

Re: Question from Potential Buyer

I appreciate the quick responses. I really like the fit and finish of the GC. I tested a Ford Edge Limited also yesterday. Same batch of features but the Jeep is nicer and I would feel cooler in the Jeep than the Ford. I think I will have to test drive it again this week. I also read about people saying they had doors that would not close. Has anyone experienced that? I have a job that keeps me traveling on the road everyday and will not have time to sit at the dealer waiting for stupid fixes.

Also have the worked the bugs out of the A/C? Or does it still blow 100 degree heat?

This would be my concern.

While I love my Jeep, I have had a lot of little glitches and warranty repairs (switches that stop working, HVAC panel stopped working, leaking steering rack, etc etc) and like you, I don't have the time to be sitting around the dealer waiting for stupid fixes. Its very annoying and significantly has depressed my enthusiasm for the Jeep, which other than that we love.

Knock on wood, but my issues seem to have been worked through at least for the moment, but I've had well over 20 individual issues that the dealer has had to fix, some a couple times.

Lots of owners are more fortunate, but if you look around the forums...I'm not unusual or alone.

YMMV...would I buy the Jeep again despite my issues? Maybe.

You can count on needing a few factory updates. That's almost a guarantee. Check the list of tsb's on the wkjeep website, that will give you an idea of the severity and frequency of issues/updates.

Overall if say the jeep is almost unbeatable when it comes to bang for your buck. I think it looks better than most vehicles In the road, has excellent off road capability and is just an awesome SUV all the way around. You could defiantly do worse as far as vehicles go....

My 2014 GC Summit is a year old this weekend. No hardware problems, just firmware updates that were minor and could be done when you want to. It is an awesome vehicle.

my summit is turning 1 year old next week! took delivery on the 13th, no mechanical or hardware problems, only the software bugs we all know about... I'd buy a jeep again if I was looking for another car!

Re: Question from Potential Buyer

The Internet is a great place to learn about things that go bump in the night because many folks are quick to complain when there are problems. But the tens of thousands of folks who don't experience an issue are less vocal. Try to keep that in mind as you research any vehicle. Yes, there are "bad ones" that come off the line. Any line. And there are often some increased issues after meaningful changes are made in a design, such as the mid-platform refresh that happened with MY14 for the JGC. Most of those issues were dealt with by last fall.

Count me in as someone who's JGC has been nearly flawless for 32500 miles and counting...
