Question on a heavy tow

Tomorrow I'm going to be towing a car I am selling and wanted to see if I am paranoid. I'm going to rent a U-Haul flat trailer so I can just pull it up on to it. It is a 99 4Runner that has a 5290gvwr. So I'm wondering towing it 90miles with no brake controller would be an issue. There is only one major pass (not like a CO pass, but still a good downhill slope) that I have to really go over. I have the V8 Trailhawk with stock tow package so it has the 7000 rated receiver. I will need to buy a bigger hitch as the one I have is only 5000gvwr. Thoughts? Should I be ok if I'm careful on the brakes and what not? Thanks. Don't want to F up my new TH.

Re: Question on a heavy tow

Does the uhaul trailer have any surge brakes on it? Usually the bigger trailers will at least have surge brakes that apply based on pressure from the tow vehicle braking and engaging the surge brakes on the trailer.

If it has those, you will be fine. If not, it could be pushing the braking limits of the Jeep.

I tow a boat that weighs about 6000 lbs with my Hemi WK2. It has the surge brakes and does just fine.

Good luck!

Re: Question on a heavy tow

You know what...it does have surge brakes. I didn't even think of that! Thanks for the reply! Look forward to putting my Jeep to work! I'll miss my old 3rd Gen 4Runner but driving the Jeep is soooooo much nicer. Just hope I get the reliability out of it I got with the Yota. Bought at 138k and not a single issue and it's at 199k now.

Hi Norcal: Just make sure after it is all loaded up that you do some "test" stopping at lower speeds to make sure the surge brakes are working before you really get rolling on the highway. U-Haul is notorious for stuff not working so test them out some before you get really underway cause if the brakes don't work you aren't gonna like it! Good luck & let us know how it goes! Dave

I second this, there is no way I would pull that much with no trailer brakes, maybe with a half ton or larger truck but not the grand cherokee. I pulled my dads 17' boat at around 3500 lbs, that was more than I wanted to stop with my wife's jeep.

Re: Question on a heavy tow

Guys...thanks for all the feedback! Made it 90mi no problems. The V8 barely flinched, even on the one grade I had to do. The buyer got the new truck. Let's just hope the Jeep runs as well as the 4R did the time I had it. Pic before I handed it over. ImageUploadedByJeepGarage1402179593.317367.jpg
