Question on Ride Quality

I picked up my Overland Hemi about a month ago. I like it. It looks stunning with the saddle leather. Build quality was pretty poor, but everything is being addressed...rattles/loose parts, broken plastic caps, broken tire stem, etc.

However, the one thing that bugs me a bit I wanted to ask you all about is the ride quality. I had a 2004 JGC limited, v8, that was pretty much buttery smooth under most driving conditions and just a little harsh over bumps.

With this 2011 JGC, it is pretty good at very low (<20mph) speeds on most normal surfaces. It does throw you around some, but nothing crazy. However, at cruising and highway speeds it can make you sick. Driving down concrete highways with seams between concrete slabs, it tosses one's head back and forth and everyone in the vehicle notices it. Not smooth at all. I assume that is harsh. Frankly, I don't know how to describe it because I've never had a vehicle not dampen that sort of thing before. Again at highway speeds it is like it is jolting at every very little thing in the road.

Can I get this adjusted? Does anybody know. I can't imagine all these ride like this.

I originally picked it up with about 42 psi in the tires from the dealer. I let out some air, since the door said the tires should be at 33psi. The dealer re-inflated to 42. I ride it at about 34 now. I'm pretty sure it was even worse up at 42.

I had a similar issue on concrete roads, which was eliminated by reducing the overinflated tires to correct pressures.

Beyond that, the WK2 has a stiff performance tuned suspension, that reminds me very much of my MB CLS550 in sport (vs. luxury) suspension mode.

My 02 WJ is much softer (and feels faster, though it isn't), but doesn't handle as well as the WK2.

That may be the Hemi type sport feel ??

My wife has the Jeep GC Laredo 06 and I always thought it drove like a truck but it is really bad now. only 65K I am replacing the struts/shocks feels like we are riding on the springs w/o any dampening.

I will never be happy because I want a luxury car ride but I will never get a luxury car (not practical for us). I am shooting for content with the ride for an SUV??

It sound to me like you are riding on the springs without the shock dampening??? Maybe you got bad shocks or the factory put the wrong size shock in place for the BIG Overland edition?? sized for the compass/Liberty??

Over inflated tires would add to this but not be responsible for it completely? Do you have a low profile tire? A higher profile tire will absorb road shock better than a low sport tire will. Also a tall tire will introduce some bounce into the car depending on situation...... It is directed to the springs/shocks and if this setup is not correct you will feel it more

I am no expert here just my backyard mechanic ability tossing out possible ideas hope you get it worked out to your liking.

ohioscott: Thanks. Actually, thats interesting. I'm going to ask them to check springs/shocks and that Shudder issue I see around these forums. I read a TSB about too much torque being sent forward during normal driving conditions. I can imagine that causing some of what I'm experiencing too.

I've heard people mention that the quadralift suspension ride more firm than the standard suspension. There have been a few different reviews where the same basic thing was said...

It would be great if an essentially identical Limited sans QL with 18 inchers were A-B'd on a test track against an Overland (QL) with 20s. Gotta think that the Overland would have better skid pad/slalom numbers.
