Quick help needed!

I took my 2014 GC to the shop today for an oil change. While I was there, I talked to the dealer (big mistake!) and they are offering to give me a 2015 Overland, tech pack for the same monthly payment as my current lease. The truck is essentially the same as mine but it's a 2015 and has 30k fewer miles... Should I go for it?

What would you do?

It's a lease so money factor and residual are important and they are both on par with what I got when I got my 2014. It *seems* like a good deal but I want to make sure I'm not missing something. Any known problems with the 2015?

Re: Quick help needed!

What's it going to cost you? If it's a straight swap...no-brainer. But when it's "the same monthly payment", you have to ask how they are going to get you there and what they are trying to get out of your pocket. Once you know that, then you can make a decision that's based on your own circumstances. In general, leases are best when there is no out-of-pocket cost outside of any required documentation and title/tag work.

Re: Quick help needed!

Nothing out of pocket. They're offering a fair value for my current truck and a decent but not great price on the new one. It seems too good to be true so I'm just skeptical but I really can't find any gotchas. Maybe it is just a motivated seller?

Re: Quick help needed!

If it's nothing out of pocket, that's pretty interesting! I would say that they are motivated to move a new vehicle...perhaps there are some to-the-dealer incentives on the line.

But check the fine print...

Re: Quick help needed!

It gets better. Or worse. Or even when I have a chance to think about the numbers.

They are giving me 36.5k for my nearly 2 year old 2014 with 30k miles on it. That gives me $2k in equity on my lease. Good.

That is being rolled into the lease. Bad.

But my car is due for a tune up - spark plugs, diff fluid, etc., and really needs new tires. That would cost $2.2k at the dealer (less if I went elsewhere but still pricey). Even at the end of it.

Right? Seems like it works out in the end. And I'm getting Max Steel (which is what I initially wanted but couldn't get before.)

Re: Quick help needed!

You seem to be doing well on this deal...that "equity" really isn't "yours" since there is no equity on a lease and the bottom line is no out of pocket. No out-of-pocket and a brand new vehicle with the same monthly payment (presumably for the same overall months as your original contract was at the start) is a nice thing.

BTW, the MY2014 Hemi isn't due for plugs until 100K. The 32K interval is for MY11-13. Nor is there a factory recommended change of the differential fluid required. Your deal is still good, but if they are telling you that you need those service items on the MY14, they are blowing smoke where you don't need it to go. Tires...perhaps you need those.

I agree with the above your dealer is full of shit if he is telling you to do those maintenance items at 30k that stuff is not until 100k unless you are beating the hell out of it with severe conditions on the fluids. Point out the maintenance schedule in the manual to your dealer. Tires at 30k yes that can certainly be legitimate and easy to check.
I would study what they are offering you carefully since they are lying to you about maintenance at 30k what else are they lying to you about. If the deal is good take it but i would be catious since you already know they lie.

Re: Quick help needed!

I just checked the manual and I do need to change the spark plugs at 30k miles. It's a V8. I also need to "inspect" the transfer case fluid. Not sure what that means/entails. And replace the air filter. So, the service guy was exaggerating the required maintenance, but not a whole lot. And I do need new tires, at least on the rear - my alignment was off for a while before I really noticed and those tires are nearly bald. Fine for most conditions but not for any wintery weather.

I figure those 2 items alone would cost $1k. But I really do appreciate your looking out for me. Now it's not an unbelievable deal but I still think it's decent. I'm going over the deal with a fine toothed comb before I sign anything tomorrow, though. Worst case is I walk away with my current truck which I absolutely love. Best case, I walk out with a new car and nothing out of my pocket except first month's payment.

In all honesty, if it's anything but the best case, I'll drive off in my 2014. We'll see in about 18 hours!

You are wrong the spark plugs on the hemi v8 on the 2014 are changed at 100k. Download the latest 2014 manual and read it, i have the same engine in mine. The 2014s have been on the road for 2 years the dealer knows they are 100k they just intentionally feeding you a line of crap. An airfilter at 30k yes its about $23 for the oem one, checking diff level takes about 30 seconds. So the $1000 they told you went to $23 real quick

Re: Quick help needed!

So, here are the numbers as best as I can recreate them right now.

MSRP: 52340
Selling price: 47500
MF: .0002
Residual: 52%
Miles: 15k
Term: 36 months

They get my truck. I get a new one with a lease extended for 19 months... Hmm. Now that I think about it, maybe it's not that great a deal. I mean, I get a new truck but 19 months of payments is quite a lot of dough.

I swear I just read that in the manual. Turns out, the manual I found online was wrong? I went to jeep.com rather just hitting up google and the first manual I found for 2014 was clear that it is 30k miles for a spark plug change. The one on jeep.com says 100k miles. I'm going to trust that one.

Not as good a deal now. :\ Too bad, I really got my hopes up.

edit: having thought about it for a few minutes, I'm actually very ok with not getting a new truck. I bought the max care unlimited plan (which was going to be refunded at a pro-rated amount) because I planned on keeping it until the bitter end. I still do. At least until something markedly better comes along.

Well the bulk of the $1k number was from the tires.
