Quick opinion on purchase of cross bars/ski rack

I turn to you trusted WK2 owners for opinions as I'm totally torn...

Heading up to our place in VT on Sunday for a week stay...the other half and I are casual (read: very casual) snowboarders...I want to hit the slopes at least twice, he'll probably just go once...I was considering buying the cross bars/board rack when I got the GC back in September but I pushed it off and now I'm in that stupid last minute panic.

Normally, I'd just shove the boards in the back, but we just got another dog, and I think we're going to be really tight space wise. Not to mention, dog food is much cheaper up there so we always buy several large bags to bring back with us.

So, do I spend $350 in a panic? The holidays kind of wiped me out this year so I'm not excited about spending the cash right now but I will if it's for the best...other option was to just bring the boots and rent a board for the days we go, which would be cheaper but obviously not a long term solution. I made some calls, and one dealer has the cross bars, and another one has the board carrier, so it can be done if the vote is in that direction.

Thanks for any input!

Re: Quick opinion on purchase of cross bars/ski rack

Living in Denver we head up to the mountains to go skiing pretty often and my rule is that the wet dirty boards/skis don't go inside my WK2 . I picked up the MOPAR crossbars and Thule ski/board rack and couldn't be happier.

Re: Quick opinion on purchase of cross bars/ski rack

tkln, I am having that same internal debate. My son wants to join a group of his skiing buds for regular trips through the rest of the season and I know I'll want to drive a few times.

Some trusted JG members have gone the non-Mopar route for their roof systems and are very happy. Mashie and others have the Mopar crossbars and are very happy. Mashie and I have the exact same vehicle and I have admired his setup so I'm leaning that way.

But your question is whether to get anything at all. If you've got a place in VT and go there with any regularity it seems like you will find at least a few times when that rack will come in very handy, esp if you have another dog now. We took my son's skis with us for our New Years Eve trip and had to put down part of the back seat. I wrapped them in towels and put down a tarp to protect the interior and that's a nonstarter as a long-term solution.

I am going to get the Mopar bars and some sort of rack. It's a good look even when you're not using it. But don't forget to budget for a cargo mat also, unless you don't care about wet boots soaking the carpet and scratching the rails back there.

Addendum: I have a really nice Yakima hitch mount bike carrier that can be converted to a ski carrier with a discontinued item called a SnowROC. However the challenge is finding one of these items (difficult), and the ergonomics of getting into the rear cargo area when it's mounted. The rooftop solution is going to work much better for me.

Re: Quick opinion on purchase of cross bars/ski rack

tkln, if you really don't want to spend the money given your infrequent outings, but need the space, you could just do the circa $220 mopar crossbars without a board rack. just bungee or strap the boards to the crossbars. a bit ghetto but effective.

the only real downsides are no security locks, and you need to be sure to use strong straps/bungees since the boards take a bunch of wind and can lift.

Just for grins I'm also going to hit up the local craigslist. Might just hit it lucky and score a used rack.

I say that but I should know myself by now. I always prefer new stuff.

Re: Quick opinion on purchase of cross bars/ski rack

Thanks for the posts guys...we go up there fairly regularly but don't snowboard that much...I guess about two or three times a season. With just the one dog, we used to wrap up the boards and put them in the back and just clean the boots/etc before packing them up...now with this second guy (6 months old and 70 lbs as of yesterday, holy crap) that ain't happening.

I also considered going ghetto with the bungees, but that would mean I'd drive a lot slower out of worry...wouldn't want to do anything crazy like that.

Does install of the cross bars take long?

Re install time, it is definitely a DIY job according to members who have done it. There are some tips on it in this thread:

Roof Rack Cross bars

Re: Quick opinion on purchase of cross bars/ski rack

Just wanted to follow up...we didn't get the rack, but we were able to fit both boards in the back (wrapped up nicely), our bags and the dogs (it was pretty cozy back there, lol). Got 8" of fresh powder yesterday so glad we brought them...will leave them up here for the season and figure it out later!

Re: Quick opinion on purchase of cross bars/ski rack

I received the Mopar WK2 Roof Rack and Ski Rack for Xmas from my wife. I am happy with both, and each takes about 30 minutes to configure and install the first time. Note that the antenna can get in the way so be careful. And to take advantage of the traditional low roof of a Jeep put Quadra-Lift in park mode so you don't have to stand on the door sill when using the ski rack.

There was some wind resistance, but no whistling or excessive noise on the highway. However, if you "vent" the moon roof the rack will whistle above 25 MPH. This is not typical operation for those who live in cold climates, although for us living in California and drive to our snow having the moon roof open during ski season is not unexpected.
