It would have meant either a narrower window (leading to people complaining about how funky it is) or a longer wheelbase (leading to a larger size, higher price, and lower fuel economy).

There's precious few vehicles where the back window goes all the way down- they either don't have a large rear window or the vehicle itself is enormous.

That was going to be my next question to AirRam...what were you coming from that had rear windows that went down completely? It certainly wasn't a Grand Cherokee, and I'm not sure I could name a 4 door vehicle where this happens.

Re: Quick Question about the Wk2 rear windows

BMW X5 has rear windows that go all the way down. My girlfriend just leased a 2011 X5 with the twin turbo and 8 speed transmission, very nicely put together machine. Of course I wouldn't be taking it camping or on some of the roads/trails I've taken my WJ.

Re: Quick Question about the Wk2 rear windows

Ah, yes, but it is what I spoke of before...a narrow window with much larger dead window space. Look at this view and generate a line from the wheel well to the space of the window. This is how they can let the window go all the way down. It also appears that the rear door is not as wide as the Grand's:

Re: Quick Question about the Wk2 rear windows

The rear windows on my Durango go all the way down, and it's rear doors curve around the tires.

Exactly! This is how the rear windows of my '01 Cherokee are done, with a small qaurter window also in the door. It has it's advantages and it's dis- advantages. This is the qaundry with the rear door windows in all new vehicles. It's one way or the other, you can't have a large flat window and have it come all the way down when the wheelwell encrouches on the rear door.

My 4Runner's rear door windows go all the way down (and so does the tailgate window, which is awesome BTW)

And a friend of mine just got a new Hyundai SUV (the smaller one, forgot the name) and her rear windows go all the way down too.
