Quick tutorial Grand Cherokee 2014 rear camera install

So, this is a quick tutorial of how to install a rear view camera in a 2014 Grand Cherokee Laredo. This tutorial can also be used for any Grand Cherokee model. I recently upgraded my radio from the RA2 to the RA4 AN but the camera and interface will work on any model of radio installed.
These are the tools and materials I used:
Drill

Dremmel Rotary tool with sanding adapter

Black Electric Tape

Splicing tool

Splice connectors

Socket and ratchet set

Trim tool removal set

Plyers

BCI-CH41 interface or any other interface you prefer.
Amazon.com : PAC BCI-CH41 Navigation Unlock and Back-Up Camera Interface for Select Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep Vehicles : Electronics

BOYO VTK380HD Embedded Style Camera or any other camera you prefer
Amazon.com : BOYO VTK380HD Embedded Style Camera : Vehicle Backup Cameras : Car Electronics

As reference I used the following links:

For Cargo door trim removal:

For Rear fascia removal

First of course, testing. I installed the module to the radio and plugged the camera to a 12 V source (For testing purpose you can use the 12v adapter located in the center console)

Then disassemble begins. I used this pdf for detailed instructions on how to remove the rear cargo door fascia. http://site.justforjeeps.com/guide/82213884.pdf
First pull the plastic trim of the rear door and unplug the courtesy lights. Sorry I forgot to take pictures of this step but it was fairly easy. Please use the plastic trim removal set. Unscrew the 8 nuts that hold the rear fascia. I donít remember the size of the nuts but itís easier to use a drill with a deep socket.

Then you have to pull two clips on both ends of the cargo door and fascia.

And push out one white clip in the middle just below the rear wiper motor.
14.JPG

Unplug the two rear lights adapters. Unscrew four black plastic nuts that hold the rear lights.
15.JPG

Nuts are circled in red. One of the nuts is out of the picture.
16.JPG

Unplug the license plate lights adapter.
17.JPG

First pull the lights out then pull the fascia out. Remove them in this order because the fascia is fitted behind the lights.
18.JPG

You will see a grommet (shown in red circle) for the License plate cables, unclip it. Of course I used this opportunity to clean the door.

Then drilling begins. The camera came with a hole saw drill bit. It was a bit small so I had to open up the hole a little bit with a dremmel and a sander adapter.

If you have to open up the hole, keep testing the fit until the camera sits perfectly. You donít want the camera to be too loose or too tight.

Perfect fit!!

Route the cables with factory cables and into the grommet.

Tape the grommet and cables.

Try to install the camera as centered as you can. If not, you will have to uninstall everything back. To avoid this, test the placement of the camera by throwing the Aux and power cable to the front seats and connect the camera to the radio again. If its centered then install and tighten everything back.
32.JPG

Testing. The camera was not centered so I adjusted it.
33.JPG

Then route the cables. Use the factory cables as your guide. I used a splice clip to ground the camera to the license plate lights ground cable. (Blue clip)
34.JPG

Use a hanger or something similar to pass the cable through the hole of the door to the grommet.
35.JPG
36.JPG

Install the cable through the grommet.
37.JPG

I was wondering why I didnít have XM radio. Install back the grommet and door trims.
38.JPG

Instead of installing the cable like the factory camera I took the easy way and routed the cable trough the sealing. Push the cable trough the interior trims. From pillar to pillar remove the door rubber seal and tuck it in. The red line shows the route that I chose for the cable.

In the drivers side, pull the rubber seal out, install the cable and remove the footwell trim cover.

43.JPG
44.JPG

The interface hangs below the left air conditioner duct. I fished the cable with a hanger from below the left air conditioner duct to the driverís side foot well cover. Connect the camera yellow cable to the yellow connector coming from the radio side. Connect the red cable from the camera to the red cable from the interface. The interface instructions recommend using a relay and not connecting the camera directly to the interface. I didnít, but if you want to, you can buy a relay at any auto shop.
45.JPG

The view of this type of camera is lower than the factory camera. I like it this way because I can see how close Iam using the rear bumper as guide. Enjoy!!

Nice write up and images. Do you get dynamic lines (moving lines when steering wheel is being moved)?

No dynamic guidelines, that is one of the disadvantages. But I knew this before installing it.

Re: Quick tutorial Grand Cherokee 2014 rear camera install

Bought the CRUX kit so I will be doing this next week on my Altitude. Question...do you need to remove the fascia to mount the camera? The CRUX video shows them drilling the hole for the camera and mounting it with the fascia still on the vehicle and just removing the inside trim so you can route the wires. I'm sure you did it to make it easier but I was wondering if it was necessary? Can you get to everything through the back once the trim is removed?

Your write up is very helpful. Thanks for taking the time!
