Re: Rack Attack Rails & Yakima Roof Rack - Pics

Ahh I see, makes sense now. Thanks for the info and additional pics. I hit the Leetsdale store this week, might make it there in the next couple of weeks for an install.

Moosehead,

Thanks for all your pics on your Rack Attack rails. To me they look much sharper than the stock OEM ones. I think the black would look better on my Black Overland than the chrome OEM ones. Couple quick questions:

1) If you had it to do over again would you still use them or wait for a Thule / Yakima conversion mount?

2) Are the Rack Attack rails compatible with Yakima and Thule both? I do not have anything of either system so I am starting from scratch.

3) There is not a rack attack near me (Texas) so do you think I could install myself or would I need a professional to do it?

Would love any other thoughts you had. Thanks, Kelly

Re: Rack Attack Rails & Yakima Roof Rack - Pics

KSO, yes we are very pleased with the rack attack rails and rest of the Yakima system. Very solid, functional, and decent looking. I believe TheNotoriousRob also did the same system. Thule's comparable towers, crossrails, and accessory racks also fit these rails. It's nice to just pop the locks open and remove the whole rack if you're cruising without gear.

Unfortunately, I would not recommend you doing this yourself. Not only do you need to drill into the rooftop, but the RA system is proprietary, not sure they would even sell it to you uninstalled? Maybe try calling one of their stores if you're up for the DIY?

Someone mentioned both Thule and Yakima will be out sometime later this spring with their new towers to fit the stock Wk2 tracks. That said, you would still be limited by the shorter spread on the stock roof tracks.

Re: Rack Attack Rails & Yakima Roof Rack - Pics

Moosehead, thank you for the very helpful and informative post. I will be heading to the Portland Rack Attack shop this Friday to have this done to my Overland, along with the Whispbar rails.

Because of your helpful post, my guy at the Portland shop was able to talk to the guys in CO that did your install. To avoid the "floating" end cap, they will need to cut the track about 1.5" shorter, set a new nut at the end, and seal/cover the existing hole with the track cap. Or, use the existing hole and leave it hanging like yours.

Since you've lived with this for a few months now, any thoughts for me before I go on the 10 hour round trip to have my rig drilled and racked?

Thanks Again. SMC

Re: Rack Attack Rails & Yakima Roof Rack - Pics

Meant to post this pic earlier. The first picture is the rear end of the rail with no overhang. They trimmed it back about an inch or two. The second shot shows how far up new rail you can position your towers in the front.

Love the Rack Attack rails, very happy with the look and feel. I'm glad I pulled the trigger on these, because, like Moose said, even with the companies developing products for the new OEM rails, it still doesn't solve spread between the bars.

Moose, Looks like a great setup, what was the OEM length in comparison... how much was gained in spread?

LOL... On the protruding cross bars...Ouch! My 6'8" height has walked into these bars in parking lots... more embarrassing than damage!

As of April, many moons later... have you seen any updates or new additions to install new rails or use OEM rails?

Moose, yer one step ahead of me... you just answered rack questions in prev thread. Thanks!!

Re: Rack Attack Rails & Yakima Roof Rack - Pics

DCJ, not funny getting clotheslined by metal bars at face height. Ouch.

I trimmed my Yak bars so that 4" are protruding on either side of the towers. This prevents both human and equipment accidents, and allows just enough room to mount bike trays on the outboard side. Putting bikes on the outboard makes it easier to reach for your shorter guests, and allows you to max load the middle with ski racks, kayaks, or clamshell storage.

My name is Moose and I gotta Rack problem.

Looks super! And Forehead approved!
When mounting only 1 bike, outside of towers... no concerns of off-center weight & wind. Probably very strong & secure; just pondering?

Re: Rack Attack Rails & Yakima Roof Rack - Pics

That is a 44 inch Fairing, fits perfect and cuts wind noise significantly even with gear. Would not go without it, only gripe is the awful label which I'll eventually cover. System is rock solid with one or 4 bikes, only limit to gear load is space.

Moose. How is wind noise with the rails and no feet?

Headed to boulder from az soon and may pull the trigger on a summit when I get out there... or a lr4, qx56, touareg, gx460, cpo 09 Cayenne turbo or a 2011 Cayenne S. Lol no idea why my wife is so agreeable.
