Re: Rack Attack Rails & Yakima Roof Rack - Pics

^J, that is the sat radio antennae from first gen WK2, it also is in a shot or two in the brochure. I believe it has since been moved to the top of dash in the head unit. My build date was Sept 2011.

Re: Rack Attack Rails & Yakima Roof Rack - Pics

How much does the rack affect gas mileage?

Thank you for all the info.

Those look nice moose. Must've been tough drilling - I'd prefer the root canal.

I don't know if this has been touched on before but any idea why the 2011 Durango has the rails built into the roof rack when not in use and you can pop them out with two clicks and set them in to be used. Why was this not a feature on the Grand Cherokee? I would take pictures of how the system works but the Durango is currently in Florida and I'm back in CT.

With the head on shot you can see where the rails click in when not going horizontal.

Do you mean they pop up then you can insert the crossbars? I don't see how/where the crossbars are stored..

I just ordered my Thule Setup, should be here tomorrow. Rapid towers, fairing and 47 inch / 53 inch aero bars. I'll send back whichever I like the least in regards to bar length. This is to be used with the stock rails.

http://www.dodge.com/en/2011/durango/interior/storage/

They mention it here under Roof Rack - the crossbars are about 2-3 inches wide and tuck in real nicely to the vertical rails - one click in the front and one in the back removes them from the vertical storage and you can then lock them in horizontally to then put your ski rack, storage bin, etc onto it.

I know its obviously a cost thing but the two are built in the same factory just weird maybe the Durango rails are longer or something.

Re: Rack Attack Rails & Yakima Roof Rack - Pics

So, I ran across this thread back in February after I'd ordered my Overland while looking around for cross-bar and rack options, and read with great interest. After a lot of research, decided I wanted to go this route as well. I'm a long way from the nearest Rack Attack store or I would have had this done for me. The OP was wise in saying this is not a typical DIY job, but I'm stubborn and consider myself pretty capable, so after my JGC came in I ordered all the parts.

Well, once I took one of the factory rails off and saw how it was mounted on studs that are riveted into the roof panel, I started having second thoughts. After much thought and planning, I dug in and started drilling. The original holes are pretty large, and I was only able to re-use one of them. So the challenge was not only removing all 12 original studs, but drilling 6 new holes on each side, and filling/covering 5 of the original holes on each side to keep water out. More work than I had hoped for, but that's the way it goes sometimes.

Got the job done and I'm happy with the results. I feel pretty good about it being really solid, more so than the original rails. With just the cross-bars I picked up not only some wind noise, but a pretty good howl by about 70mph. The howl went away, and even a bit of the wind noise, with the basket mounted. I will likely take the basket and crossbars off when I'm not using them.

Anyway, thought I'd share my experience and some pictures. Thanks to everyone on the forum for all that you've shared - I've learned alot!

Moose - Thanks for the original write-up and all of your pics!

Dayum danno, that is one helluva DIY, nice work. If ypu hsven't tried it yet, the fairing eorks well on noise and drag. Cheers.

Re: Rack Attack Rails & Yakima Roof Rack - Pics

Are there any aftermarket cross bars that fit the WK2 OEM set up? If so, anybody have a link?

I just can't process surgury for this. Drilling not only risks water but also rust. Guess I'm not as adventurous on this.
