Rack Attack Rails & Yakima Roof Rack - Pics

The stock roof rack tracks and cross rails are my only real complaint with the WK2. Below are prior threads debating OEM racks for the 2011 JGC.

Roof Rail specs

http://jeepgarage.org/showthread.php...ight=roof+rack

Since we use the racks year round for sporting gear and hauling other stuff such as building materials, I just bit the bullet on the Rack Attack track system, which replaces the stock tracks. The RA tracks are much more solid and existing towers/roof racks from both Yakima and Thule can be locked to the tracks securely.

The stock tracks came off with no hardware left inside the roof. RA tracks mount up with expanding bolts rated for 200 lbs each, so no washers or nuts are needed beneath the roof for mounting.

Downside, is the tracks and install will cost circa $300, in addition to whatever rack system you want, and there will be another 4-5 holes drilled into your brand new rooftop for each track. Yes, a bit of pucker factor, but each hole is sealed with silicone and RA warrantees the tracks for the life of the vehicle. Warning: the sound of drills into a new rig made it feel like I was getting a root canal.

Pics of the new RA system with Yakima towers, cross bars, and ski rack below. The Yak towers lock to the tracks, and once unlocked, the whole rack system can be removed from the vehicle easily and quickly. The rest of the Yakima rack system has matching lock cores so everything is secured with the same single key.

Second post will be of the stock Chrysler track system.

Re: Rack Attack Rails & Yakima Roof Rack - Pics

Pics of Chrysler OEM tracks which are flimsy, provide only 30" of useable length, and only accommodate the OEM cross bars which do not lock to the vehicle.

Other alternative is to wait for Yakima or Thule to make towers for the WK2 stock tracks. This would obviously be less expensive and require no drills.

Very nice. They look solid and clean on the vehicle. BTW, your shark fin antenna looks quite sexy. I'm going to have to get one of those when I get my car as well.

Nice, I'm glad someone pulled the trigger. Did you go with the 58" crossbars? They look longer from the pics. I'm seriously considering this option as well, definitely can't wait for Yakima to make new towers. Also, the shark fin is a good idea if you're going to carry a cargo box on your rack since the stock antenna would interfere. Might have to get one of those as well. Thanks for the info and pics.

TNR, yes these are the 58" bars, there is about 8 1/2" of extra bar protruding outside of the towers on each side.

Not sure if I'll cut them flush to the towers, or leave say 4" on the outside for bike racks, as they are easier to reach on the perimeter.

Looks good Moose. Is the rack no-worries-solid? Also, I noticed you have the small antenna fin (must have missed that mod post). Which antenna fin is that and is it issue-free?

Re: Rack Attack Rails & Yakima Roof Rack - Pics

Thanks for the write-up, Moose! Sadly, I will have to make this decision very soon. I already have Yakima towers, crossbars, and powderhounds so it seems like the logical thing to do. I just can't help but think that if I hold out a bit longer Yakima will offer landing pads that will work with the OEM tracks.

Hmmm...what to do?

All that said, thanks for taking the time to post the pictures. You are a brave soul indeed to let these guys drill into your new Jeep!

Nice! So how much of a spread do you have between the front & rear cross bars when they are both moved as far apart as possible? The tracks look like they are much longer than the OEM tracks....

Re: Rack Attack Rails & Yakima Roof Rack - Pics

Bmwister - the rack is rock solid, maybe moreso than any other rooftop system I've had up top any vehicle. I'll report back after the first major snowmelt off the rooftop.

MD - Yak should be coming out with the landing pads soon, but we're gonna be skiing pow tomorrow AM. Heh.

MSCA - the total track length is 54", so given some leeway for towers, you could probably see 52-52" spread between cross bars at max.

Happy Turkeyday All!

Wow, I was hoping you'd say you had the 66ers. I have 58s as well, but I wonder how the 48s would look?? Maybe too short? I like a little extra bar on the sides as well... might have to get out the ol' tape measure this weekend and see what options I'd have. Cutting the bars seems easy enough since you'd never know with end caps.

Two more things...
How long did install take? They quoted me two hours or so.

And in your last picture with the new rails (picture of your ride on the street), the back end of the rails look like they're floating above the roof a few millimeters. Is it an optical illusion or just part of the system and it's totally ok? I would think they'd be flush against the roof.

Thanks-

Re: Rack Attack Rails & Yakima Roof Rack - Pics

^Good eye TNR, yes the rear piece hangs over the raised rib a bit. Suggest either shortening the rail by an inch or so, or I may just remove the rear piece. It sits flush to the rib on the front end.

Took about 2 1/2 hours for install. Ask for James or Matt if you are at the Leetsdale store.

First shot of rear piece, second shot of 58" bars trimmed down 7 1/2" total, leaves about 4 1/2" on either side of the towers.
