Or, an aluminum foil hat with a USB key plugged into it.

You could ask the UConnect folks if you could ship them a homing pigeon and a blank USB key.... for RFC 2549 compliant download.

It is technically possible to pay for a couple hours of wireless access and download it from the built in G3, but that would require UConnect adding the httpget() or similar code to QNX and extract then dump the ISO to a USB.
You've apparently never downloaded the file.

Actually I've downloaded several and installed them... but have more important things to whine about such as:
- The buzzing from the honeybees in my sunflowers is too loud
- The grass is still too green
- There are still too many leaves on my trees
- Just possibly the mountains here are too bumpy

This is a bit off topic for a car forum but....

The precursor to OS/X, NeXT began development in the mid 80's. However, Apple didn't buy NeXT until 1997 and released OSX in 1999.

The Linux project started in 1991. By 1998, "many major companies such as IBM, Compaq and Oracle announce their support for Linux" (wikipedia).

Of course, various UNIX versions, such as BSD go back to the 1970's.

So... No... Linux was pretty much a mature OS and being used in enterprise environments by the time Apple started on OS/X.

Re: Rant Uconnect Update

Looks as if we have some smarts around here.

Were are the EEs and SEs so we can reverse engineer this uconnect system?

The update should be cryptographically signed and no update processed without the signature being validated by the public key on the Jeep--meaning the file is perfectly valid and there's nothing the dealer can add to the update process. Jeebus Cripes, this is computer science 101!!

I don't think you are as smart as you think you are. I find that smart people don't need to impress us with how smart they are. We just naturally know that without our intelligence being questioned. While you are trying to figure out what I said you might want to know I have 3 earned college degrees with a minor in computer science. Even with that kind of a background I don't want to take the chance on screwing up a firmware flash which can very easily be done. I would rather put that responsibility on the dealer while I am enjoying a free donut or some popcorn in the showroom. What I want to know is why I can update my Directv box, Blu Ray player, and Cell Phone over the air/internet with no action needed on my part, and why I can't upgrade my Uconnect that way?

Re: Rant Uconnect Update

I found the history of NeXT sort of interesting. I had a few NeXT terminals in my organization that I was responsible for. I hated them because they always had issues. Someone talked the president into buying them for him and his two admin assistants so I was always being called up to his office to work on them. Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled programming/thread/rant.

I just take my Jeep over to my dealer (less then 2 miles from my home) when ever a new Uconnect update comes out and I am in and out in less than a half hour. Usually I can get some other freebies while I am there as well and look at any new models while I am waiting.
If it breaks by flashing it myself. I take to the dealer, act dumb, and say fix it. Unlikely ever to happen.

Most of us would way prefer flash it ourselves and save the dealer for real issues. If I want to look at new cars, I can do that any time.

So, if you break it yourself you would just be dishonest and act dumb? Maybe that works for you but I couldn't live with myself if I did that. I am not sure you can speak for everyone and state what we prefer. Myself, I enjoy poking around my dealership. I have made a friend of my service manager and like getting the latest information that he has. I also like keeping current with my salesman and keeping the communication door open with the body shop manger should I ever need his services.

If it breaks during the flash which they allow the end user to perform, it should be covered under your warranty. I don't see any reason why you would need to be dishonest.

I guess it all depends on how you look at that. Some people give themselves a lot more wiggle room in what they call honest than I allow myself. Besides there is a big difference in "should be covered" and having an argument with dealer/Chrysler as to you breaking it and being responsible for it. My experience has been if there is any way they can put the blame on you for breaking it they will.
