No you don't. Become a premium member and download it straight from the Jeep Garage website without a helper application. Even if you want to do it on the cheap I can download the helper app and download the Uconnect update using Safari on my MacBookPro laptop without a problem.

I don't have ready access to Windows or OSX and nor do I want to.

It's just annoying that you can't just download the file.

Also I don't want to pay to download a free update.

I am not sure what you are using if you are not using OS X or Windows. But in any case, just go to your dealer. They will install the latest update for free. I can download the update with my Mac but should something go wrong with installing it I don't want to be blamed for destroying my head unit. I just take my Jeep over to my dealer (less then 2 miles from my home) when ever a new Uconnect update comes out and I am in and out in less than a half hour. Usually I can get some other freebies while I am there as well and look at any new models while I am waiting.

You're not just paying to download a free file. By becoming a paid member you are helping to keep Jeep Garage operating. It is supported by users, like yourself.

Gee, Linux.
The Operating System that Mac OSX is based on and that Windows can't seem to buy out or suppress (not that they haven't tried).

Oh and it's completely free and there are versions geared towards running on older hardware so you aren't caught up in the 'hardware upgrade' race every time Windows comes out with a new version.

{off-topic} Sorta...OSX came from BSD Unix which long pre-dates Linix, but for practical purposes in current times, they are "really close"...[/off-topic}

UGH!
You can use an Apple computer if necessary... or you can ask your dealer to do it and hope they install the actual latest version instead of the most recent one they got around to...

You could probably use Knoppix and Mozilla to download the update if you don't like either Windows or MacOSx.

...or Linux, or AIX, or HP-UX, or Solaris, or MVS.

Or, an aluminum foil hat with a USB key plugged into it.

You could ask the UConnect folks if you could ship them a homing pigeon and a blank USB key.... for RFC 2549 compliant download.

It is technically possible to pay for a couple hours of wireless access and download it from the built in G3, but that would require UConnect adding the httpget() or similar code to QNX and extract then dump the ISO to a USB.

MAC OS/X is a real Unix, based somewhat on Jobs' NeXTSTEP with a Mach kernel based on BSD. Linux was still crapping in its crib when Apple started on MAC OS/X, largely using IBM RS/6000 RISC boxes for development.

Windows pretty much gave up on trying to kill Linux, and now there are a few companies making good money with their own distros and kernels.
