Rear suspension "clunk"

My vehicle is a 2014 Grand Cherokee Overland with air suspension. Searched but did not locate discussion of this problem. The symptoms are:

· A loud “clunk” as the suspension moves. This occurs at slow speed in the dirt. It sounds like heavy metal to metal contact. This sound first appeared traveling a rutted dirt road.

· The “clunk” is more frequent as the air suspension is raised.

· Limited travel in the rear suspension resulting in poor road contact. The suspension seems to bottom out against a stop.

· The ride is uncomfortable especially for rear seat passengers.

I found 2 related service bulletins that recommend replaceing the shocks or shock mounts. Dealer is waiting on mounts. So there must be others with this issue. If you have experienced this clunk did the dealer fix work or how did you resolve the issue?

We are leaving 10/1 on a 10 day road trip, including some off road excursions, and would like to resolve this before heading down the road. Apprecciate your input. Thanks.

Keith

Re: Rear suspension "clunk"

Are you at a raised height, especially ORA-II level? If so, there is very limited suspension travel available and yes, it will hit "top" on bumps. Normal behavior. If it's happening at "normal" ride height, then there is more a-foot...

I do not know the ride height when I heard the first clunk but then I played with the settings. The clunk is at all levels, more frequent at the higher ride heights.

Re: Rear suspension "clunk"

This is a common issue with WK2 GC's. I have a '14 overland, 5.7, RWD that does the same thing. It drives me crazy! There are several TSB's for 2013 and 2014 models with or without 4WD it doesn't seem to matter. It appears that the shock brackets and the rear OEM shocks are the issue. Mine has not gone back to the dealer yet for the reported fix. Several of us would like to know how your dealer visit turns out. Please let us know what happens.

We took our 2104 Limited (w/ORA-II and air suspension) for some mild off-roading last weekend and had a similar thing happen. To me, it seemed almost like the the AWD was "clunking" due to seizing/slipping. Didn't think too much of it until I saw this thread. Never had this happen otherwise in the year we have had it.

Re: Rear suspension "clunk"

I had a similar clunk on my 2012 overland, but only in highest setting and it was clearly when the wheel was going to the end of travel and it was either in the air, or close to end of travel.
As it never happened on road I ignored it and thought it's just a nasty bottom out sound.

For the electric lsd on the diesel and V8, there is a tsb--where the tsb was put out for clunk in parking lots, etc.
