Re: Recall 2012 and 2013 JGC

A Jeep-affiliated resource on another forum indicated that the affected VINs have not yet been uploaded into "the system", so even dealers do not know which vehicles need the ABS module reprogramming. It's a process that has to work through...and those affected will be notified.

So very true. Sounds like it has more to do with feedback on the pedal and not actual braking. I have had some vehicles that went to a numb feeling when ABS kicks in and others that made it actually "feel" like it is doing something. Some people may mistake the numb feeling for failure.

Anyone else think it's scary that software has something to do with braking?? As reliable as software can be that's scary lol...

Re: Recall 2012 and 2013 JGC

Good thing software doesn't. The issue at hand is pedal FEEL. Not braking action.
Quote:
Another 25,250 SUVs -- the 2012-2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango -- are being recalled to fix the braking system. Specifically, there may not be enough brake fluid circulating through the system during a panic stop, which could cause the pedal to feel softer than normal.

These vehicles come with a safety feature called Ready Alert Braking, which acts to prime the brake pads closer to the rotors when the pedal is pushed down rapidly and hard. Chrysler said the brakes will work normally and a software update "optimizes flow and restores appropriate pedal feel." A total of about 18,700 cars are affected in the U.S.

Re: Recall 2012 and 2013 JGC

I got an email from the DOT this morning about the recall. The most interesting part of the notice to me was this attachment describing the defective part and the chronology of events leading to the recall.

Re: Recall 2012 and 2013 JGC

Thanks for posting, Angler

I wonder how an ABS Module flash can fix the out-of-specification bores?

"TRW inspected warranty units and determined the hard pedal feel was caused by a reduced
flow capability within the Traction Control Isolation Valves (TC ISO) valves during RAB events.
The reduced flow thru the TC ISO valves was caused by the bore diameter dimensions
measuring below the specification limits, at the depth within the bore where the Seat and Lip
Seal are positioned.
Root Cause was determined to be tool wear that was exacerbated by CMM measurements
that did not identify the out-of-specification condition at deeper points within the bores.
Analysis of part returns and SPC data indicated manufacturing tools #81 and #86 produced
the out-of-specification bores. The suspect TRW manufacturing period was October 6, 2011-
September 18, 2012."

"Description of Remedy
Chrysler will conduct a voluntary safety recall to flash the ABS Module on all the affected
vehicles."

Re: Recall 2012 and 2013 JGC

My thoughts exactly, Summit. I did like learning about the Ready Alert Braking system, though.

Re: Recall 2012 and 2013 JGC

I got my notice for my 2012 model. Went to the dealer on 04/10/14. The ABS system was flashed with new programming. It took about an hour. While there, the dealer flashed two other updates; one for the PCM and the other for the HVAC. The PCM update noticeably improved shifting characteristics. I never had a circumstance involving actuation of the ABS so I never encountered the hard break feel described in the recall. Nonetheless, there's peace of mind in having the recall work done.

Re: Recall 2012 and 2013 JGC

Had mine done last week when I had it in for an oil change. Mentioned it to my service writer and he took care of it along with several other software updates they found. No complaints with service from my dealer whatsoever.
