Re: Recall- 2016 Jeep GC for bad transmission wiring harness

LOL... I went 2 months before getting my first recall about the LH brake caliper being cast from an incorrect material. Why only the LH caliper? Anyway, that's the only one that shows up in a VIN search and I've already received notice by mail.

Looks like recall number 2 will be on the way in the mail shortly.

As noted in the report, the fix includes replacing the shifter assembly - drivetrain/engine has no bearing on whether a vehicle is affected or not. Additionally, the recall covers early 2016MY vehicles built prior to February 20th, 2016.
I can confirm, that Diesels are also affected. I just checked on moparownersconnect, and it shows S28 recall for my GC. My build date is 16th Feb 2016.

Re: Recall- 2016 Jeep GC for bad transmission wiring harness

Got my S28 recall notice in the mail yesterday. What it states...

"The brake/transmission shift interlock (BTSI) solenoid on your vehicle may have an incorrectly crimped electrical connector wire terminal(s). A loss of BTSI solenoid function could lead to the transmission gear selector becoming locked in the P or N position. This condition could cause a crash without warning."

So, it appears that this could happen while the vehicle is in motion, not just stopped at an intersection like some others said earlier? That makes it far more serious.

They state that the repair is replacing the gear selector assembly.

Re: Recall- 2016 Jeep GC for bad transmission wiring harness

Stopped at the dealer after work to have the casting number on the brake caliper verified... it will need to be replaced under the S16 recall.

Also confirmed that the S28 shifter recall on the 16's will replace the entire shifter assembly.

Plus they have two software updates available for me.

So along with replacing my door armrest they'll have plenty to do after I drop it off on the way to work some morning.

Wow they are putting in an entire new shifter. I thought it was only software.

Software only for the MY14-15. The MY16 issue is for a limited number of vehicles and is a completely different situation than the MY14-15.

S28 involves 32, 267 GCs built between 15th May 2015 - 19th Feb 2016.

Please let us know how long it took for dealer to complete S28 and what were those two software updates for and if it improved anything for you.

I am just trying to clarify the cross-up between this recall and the software only S27 recall for all MY14/15. Yes, the MY16 S28 recall has the specifics you reference but I am not getting the error. Last thing I want to do is create more confusion.

Are you anchored on the May 15, 2015 start date that is obviously 6 months before the published 12/15 production start date for MY16? That is confusing for sure. If so, that is either an error or the day the first mule/pilot rolled down the line. S28 is definitely a MY16 only recall.

The wordings are confusing for sure. I have highlighted those.
I am copying and pasting from NHTSA site:

SUMMARY:
Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain model year 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured May 15, 2015 to February 19, 2016. The brake transmission shift interlock solenoid may have a loose electrical connection which could result in a loss of solenoid function.
CONSEQUENCE:
If the solenoid loses function, the transmission may lock in the Park or Neutral position when the vehicle comes to a stop, possibly rendering the vehicle disabled in traffic, increasing the risk of a crash.
REMEDY:
Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the shifter assembly, free of charge. The recall began on May 27, 2016. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is S28.
NOTES:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to Home | Safercar -- National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Yep, the May 2015 does not mean MY15 is is involved....likely the date the first MY16 vehicle (pre-launch production) got the new shifter.
