I received a recall notice today for 2011 and 2012 model year Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango.
The sun visors on your vehicle may experience a high resistance short at the sun visor vanity lamp wiring after a service repair to the sun visor, headliner or while gaining access above the headliner. This may result in an inoperative vanity lamp and/or an electrical fire.
FCA will repair your vehicle free of charge. To do this, your dealer will replace the sun visors, modify the surrounding sheet metal and install vanity lamp wiring guides. The work will take about three hours to complete. However, additional time may be necessary depending on service schedules.
Sounds like ljramsey got the actual "we got the parts; come get it fixed" letter. The initial recall letter I got months ago did not say anything about replacing the sun visors, modifying the sheet metal, and wire guides.
The Recall page for my 2011 now says the parts are available. It did not say that when I checked it a week or two ago.
Read the notice carefully, there MAY be a problem "AFTER a service repair to the sun visor, the headliner, or while gaining access above the headliner" so I take this to mean if you never had any of these services done, than there shouldn't be a problem. google the TSB number, and read the procedure. step #1 is "wash your hands thoroughly" and the rest involves dismantling almost the entire interior. I know someone that had it done, and not only didn't the tech wash his hands, but probably fell in the mud before starting the job! I keep getting follow-up notices for this and every time I go to the dealer, they try to push this on me, and I refuse.
It actually was "broken" originally, but in some cases, the fix was botched by the technicians, causing continued risk of fire. The new fix is supposed to address that better.
Wk2jeeps.com has the repair document available for this one. It involves using a grinder! :-O
I had considered unplugging my visors but waited on the final-final recall before doing so. I have a good dealer but even then I'm not comfortable with them doing this much work on it. For a stupid 5W bulb, why not just replace it with a battery powered LED reading lamp?
Yep,got the notice too,BUT,having been at this Dealership for so long,I guess I know everyone and am friendly with them,(I never complain about prices or work needing done),so when I called to confirm, the Service Manager called me back about 20 minutes later and honestly told me(which I appreciated),they WILL be getting the parts and it takes ALOT longer than the stated 3 hour repair time, appx 5-6 hours and being a light colored interior headliner they can't guarantee it to be "stain and or fingerprint free due to the work involved, but they DO use the same (forget the correct word),stuff used to remove water stains from leaking sunroofs).I really appreciated the candid honesty and has given me food for thought. My 2011 JGC I have owned from new without issue, and only having 28,000 on her,I am alittle dubious,so am in no rush to have the fix fix done.(Although I never had the original repair done due to reading fire issues on the repair). If I DO have the repair done I will post before and after pictures,so everyone can be informed. Its likely they MAY let me take pictures during aswell.I say maybe as I'm not sure if they will allow me in the workshop two or three times to take pictures.
Just had it done while in for something else. Couldn't even tell it was touched. Not sure why some folks think it is such a big deal to remove a head liner but don't bat an eye at a timing belt in a car.
