Re: Rejected Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit Delivery

I think it sucks that the dealer demanded $500. I was at my dealer the other day looking for a Summit. Didn't see anything that would satisfy me. My salesman, who I dealt with on numerous occasions, said that he would order me what I thought I would like and when it came in if I didn't want it they would just sell it to someone else.

This portion is hilarious to me.

So glad I made the choice with my truck.

I don't believe this is true either. With the 20" rims and other aesthetics they've move away from the utility to capture a wider market, going after BMW/LR buyers so to this lack of attention on outside trim/body does not hold up.
That doesn't change the underlying capabilities of the vehicle.

You can put street tires, a fancy stereo, nice leather seats in your Rubicon, but it doesn't change the costs associated with making the Rubicon a Rubicon (lockers all around, sway-bar disconnects, solid axles, etc.). Nor does it make the Rubicon a luxury vehicle. Rather, it adds luxury accents to a utility vehicle.

And this is what I suggest the JGC is. Clearly the luxury accents are more pronounced, but luxury is clearly not it's primary goal.

I have an Overland, and it's very nice, but look closely and you'll see enough materials (plastics and finishes) that suggest luxury isn't it's primary intent. It's just the nice bits are strategically placed to distract you from the less nice bits.

The JGC is a jack of all trades, master of none. Decent off road, decent on road. And now... with "decent" luxury.

Chrysler has pretty much eliminated being able to order odd color combinations anyway so that was not a problem. I realize the Grand Cherokee is built at the Jefferson plant and the Cherokee is built at the Toledo plant but in any case I have had 6 months to go over my Cherokee. Even with my perfectionism and OCD I have not been able to find anything to complain about. I have had this discussion with the service manager at my dealer several times. He believes a lot of the Jeep complainers do not realize what type of vehicle they are buying but bought it because Jeeps are currently "in" and "cool". They think because it cost above $40,000 it is like a Lexus, Mercedes Benz, or BMW when in reality it is a utility vehicle more akin to a truck. You are never going to have a Jeep with the fit, finish, and ride of a foreign luxury car as it isn't designed to be one. If that is what you are looking for then do yourself a favor and look at other vehicles/brands.
Right.

And if all the trucks on the lot were so bad. And I assume he test drove a summit before he ordered. Why did he order one in the first place.

I agree. A jeep isn't a Lexus or BMW. The AVERAGE price of a BMW is probably above $55K. Where the average price of a Jeep is probably well below $40K.

If I bought a Ford Pinto with a solid gold steering wheel does that make it a luxury car?

I'm pretty picky too. And the only issues I've had on my limited is the rear hatch handle and the tail light being snug on the right. Neither I've had fixed yet (after 6 months).

Truck has been pretty remarkable. Only issue has been transmission firmware, now resolved.

I'd never spend $55K for Jeep. If I was in that price range I probably would be looking at other brands. But for $37K, it's a bargain. And is in Jeep prime Market Range.

As far as worrying about quality inside. It's a global economy now. Transmissions, Brake systems etc. are shared between all brands these days.

Engine wise I think Jeep has a pretty respectable line up. Again for it's average price range they do.

Our Company Landlord bought an $85K BMW SUV. He HATED it. When he saw my limited he went and bought an Overland. He loves it. Couple features he misses from BMW. But overall he loves the Jeep.

I think it's partly Jeeps fault people are looking for problems because they did have serious problems. But from what I've seen on the lots the bulk of the quality issues are past. I'm sure there will still be bumps. After all it is a Jeep.

I would have given the dealer a shot at fixing the issues BEFORE accepting.

I do appreciate the OP being honest enough to share what went down though.

Re: Rejected Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit Delivery

I agree with the OP to not accept the vehicle. However, I think he should have given the dealership the opportunity to fix these issues before backing out of the deal. Misaligned body panels is unacceptable, at least in my opinion. But these can be easily fixed by any body shop and the dealership could've taken care of that.

Except what exactly constitutes a "misaligned" body panel? All panels must have exactly 1/16" between them +/- 1/100"? Is an 1/16" space in one area and 1/8" in another OK?

The phrase "misaligned" is pretty vague. I'll give the OP the benefit of the doubt and assume that I too would have felt what I seen wasn't within spec, but right now, we simply say it is "misaligned", and everyone nods and says "yah, that isn't right!".

But, in the end, we're all waving our hands.

Re: Rejected Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit Delivery

Where did the 1/16" +- 1/100" come from? That is a tight tolerance.

I made that up as an example. But that's kind of my point. Just saying "misaligned" isn't very specific.

Why would the dealer fix it when they can get 500 cash to not fix it and then sell the vehicle to someone else who won't care? The new america. Gotta love it.
