Those are the results of the 2013 JD Power Vehicle dependability study of 2010 model year vehicles. Jeep (and dodge/chrysler) still seem to be bottom of the barrel. What is more concerning is that the Chrysler brands improved very little from 2011; despite all the talk of quality improvements they improved less than the industry average.
What are peoples' comments/thoughts on this? I am not trying to start a flame war, just posting information to stimulate conversation on this important matter.
26 months / 16K miles on mine with no issues. Came from 4runners that never needed anything but gas, oil and tires.
I took a leap of faith with my first American brand and am very pleased to date... I love my GC. But if reliability gremlins pop up, I will part ways with it. Got no time to fool with non reliable transportation.
I thought about a 4runner when I purchased my Grand Cherokee. However I went back and forth on whether I liked the 5th Gen 4Runner design. How would you compare the two?
Would the 2010 model year (released in 2009) really give the "new" Chrysler enough time to make reliability improvements? I wouldn't expect them to be made until the 2011 model year (which also happens to be the first model year for the WK2) across the board, unless I'm remembering my dates wrong here.
The 2013 Vehicle Dependability Study is based on responses from more than 37,000 original owners of 2010 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership.
I have a 2012 overland w/ hemi with 25000 miles on it with no problems so far. My father-in-law bought a 2013 Mercedes ML450 ($64000) and he's already had an electrical problem with less than 3000 miles.
I owned a Lexus IS350 prior to my JGC. In 6 years I replaced/repaired exactly nothing. Zero. Nadda.
In 11 months of JGC ownership I've:
1) Had the remote-start climate control reprogrammed (after bringing TSB to dealer--after dealer diagnosed nothing wrong)
2) Heater fan replaced due to worn out bearings
3) Still unsolved mystery high-pitched squeal on cold morning start ups (dealer replaced power steering pump and pulley to no avail)
4) Rear suspension rattles and clunks--bringing it dealer next week to get that looked at.
This is my first big-3 vehicle ever, and its living up to the stereotype of crappy quality that has kept me away.
Did you not do the recalls and TSB's consisting of:
1. valve spring recall - mandatory and dangerous if not done
2. gas pedal adjustment - fake TSB because of the Prius "problem"
3. cam gear startup rattle
4. dash rattle
5. Fuel pressure sensor inspection/replacement
I also just sold a 2007 IS350 and didn't have any major problems outside these 5 recalls and TSB's. 2 other issues I had were the power tilting mirrors stopped working, and rust showed up on one of the wheels. Both fixed under warranty.
While it was an unreal car and gave me 106k reliable miles, it didn't come without a few issues within the first 3-4 years of ownership.
Looking forward to my 2014 GC, but will get a warranty to protect myself. Chrysler may not make a Lexus, but they seem to make extended warranties very reasonable.

Several independent surveys were taken of 2011/2012 Grand Cherokee owners. Those with 5.7L had very high percentage, like 90% or something would buy the vehicle again, and I think it was the best pride of ownership of any SUV, maybe any vehicle on the road today. Someone has this info. somewhere on the forum. I think Milous has posted it before.
12 GC Summit V6, 13,000 miles in 12 months. Not one issue large or small. The JD Powers report in question as stated by others is for model year 2010. Wait a couple of years and we will see if things on the new GC are holding together or not. Also remember the numbers are for all Jeep models from 2010, not just the GC.
I don't need any opinion poll to tell me that Japanese cars are usually very reliable.
If someone wants to drive a Lexus... I get it. But the thing is...Lexus just ain't my style.
There is a story in this morning's WSJ clarifying the fact that the WK in question was engineered before the bail out and Fiat's take over. Also mentioned that the latest alliteration would be included in next year's survey. Therefore, it's okay to unbunch your undies!
Had the SRT8 for three weeks before the headlight and housing had to be replaced. To make matters worse, it took over a week just for the part to make it to the dealership......
I have had two cylinder heads replaced, upper control arm, sway bar, axle shaft, hub bearing, strut, strut mount, spring, and soon to be a lower control arm. I have only owned the vehicle for 13 months. Needless to say I am beyond frustrated but have no idea what else to do other than let them keep doing the work.
I know you're not trying to flame, just saying every brand has their problems. Sorry you've had such bad luck with the Jeep so far...hopefully things improve for you.
Just remember that for every thread on here that includes a problem, there are thousands, or hundreds of thousands of perfectly happy GC owners.
did you get an extended warranty?
non-Lexus dealer trips sure must be a pain. As you know, you are legit treated like royalty at Lexus, and their loaner program is incredible. Many times, they even offered to come to my office and swap out my car for a loaner...but I always said no. The less time a mechanic drives my car, the better...haha.
I'm not necessarily unhappy with my 12 GC but it has had more problems than my other new cars had. Nissan Maxima & Honda Accord, zero problems in 80,000 miles of ownership on each. Waiting to bring my GC in for the climate control problem, after Jeep had no solution for the entire summer. Also getting ready to take it in as I believe the front bearings are starting to go bad. Nothing major but annoying none the less.
