Remote Start can kill?

Fortunately the WK2 remote start turns off after 15 minutes (I hope).

To all the haters who dismissed as nutty the dangers of CO poisoning...
(see: http://jeepgarage.org/showthread.php...837#post366837 ) it can happen. More people probably die of CO then get backed over by vehicles (reference to NHTSA proposal to require back-up cameras).

"Car with keyless ignition might have been left running at West Boca home, killing a couple with carbon monoxide"

Re: Remote Start can kill?

I know what carbon monoxide poisoning is like, as we had to endure it during a monster Midwestern blizzard we got caught in years ago when electricity was off for several days and we were trapped on a remote farm. All we could to keep from freezing to death was to use a noxious propane heater filched from the farm's large machinery outbuilding. These fumes may be tasteless and odorless, but they make you sicker than a dog. We survived by turning the heater on and off, striking a balance between freezing to death and dying from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Given this experience, I didn't plan on using remote start in our enclosed detached garage. But it's reasonably large and drafty enough that it works nicely with no signs of carbon monoxide poisoning, given the 15 minute time limit. So now we do it regularly with no apparent ill effect. Of course, the vehicle is well sealed and the heater automatically recirculates interior air, which doubtless helps.

I'm certainly not recommending this for others, but rather pointing out that while safety comes first the devil's in the specifics and in our circumstances it works.

Re: Remote Start can kill?

The article isn't talking about remote start, its talking about keyless enter and go systems and...frankly...morons leaving their cars running in their garages and gassing themselves to death.

I'm sorry...but I don't get it. How do you get out of a car with it running in an enclosed garage and not know its running? My cars are loud as sh!t in my enclosed garage. If its a hybrid or something I might be able to understand, but to say in this article that there is no warning sound and there "needs to be"? How about the HUGE, LOUD RUNNING MACHINE IN YOUR CLOSED GARAGE? HELLO! Pretty effective warning to me.

So no, keyless entry and start doesn't kill people...remote start doesn't kill people...being stupid kills people.

Re: Remote Start can kill?

Sorry but if you are too dumb is shut off a car before you leave it, then death would be a better life choice for you. The same goes for turning on a remote start inside your garage with the doors and windows shut.

I mean...its like talking about the dangers of toasters because people have electrocuted themselves using their toasters in the bathtub...

"We simply must have a cutoff for the toaster in case its submerged in water!"

Re: Remote Start can kill?

What if a toddler gets ahold of your keys and hits the start button? My jeep will turn off in 15 then right? This is a worry I have with 3 kids 3 and under. They have been known to find our car keys...My current cars don't have remote start. But occasionally I hear the horn honking cause my kid found the keys and pressed the lock or panic...hahaha

Re: Remote Start can kill?

Only have to press the panic button once. the remote twice in a timely fashion. It shouldn't be an issue. Plus, keep the keys out of their reach, just like matches and lighters.

Re: Remote Start can kill?

I am trying to understand how a car running in a closed garage would create a hazard inside a house. Even an attached garage is considered a non-insulated part of the house so all surrounding areas of the house are insulated and protected from the garage. If it was their car that cause the CO levels then they had a poorly built home.

Re: Remote Start can kill?

^^^ A lot of homes aren't properly sealed from the attached garages, especially older homes. Newer homes should have some separation but not 100%....my other home which was less than 10 years old still had smells that permitted the home (when a skunk sprayed under the deck) all the way into the garage and it was a well built house. If you ever watch Holmes on Homes on HGTV you see the shoddy work...it happens all the time so I wouldn't rely on the home being separated properly from the garage.

- True that small kids love to play with keys...and yes they will press a button twice in a row (not sure how that makes an owner an idiot kids play with keys...a lot of people have no clue about CO too). Fortunately, the WK2 will turn off after 15 minutes. Just pointing out the issue so people are aware.
