Replacing strut (QD2)

Anybody ever done this? The dealer is quoting me $1800!

For a single strut or both? The MSRP for a single strut is around $1100, if you have the air suspension--much less if not. Even the air suspension struts can be found online via several sites for around $750. Total labor shouldn't be more than 2 hours per side or so.

If that price is for a single strut, they're either charging WAY over MSRP for the part or jacking up the labor time.

What is wrong with the strut that it needs to be replaced?

Re: Replacing strut (QD2)

Hit a curb hard enough to bend it I guess.

Re: Replacing strut (QD2)

Depending on the mileage on your WK2 shocks and struts should be replaced in pairs. You will also need an alignment and you probably just didnt bend the rear shock.

What were the symptoms after you hit the curb?

Re: Replacing strut (QD2)

There is 43,000 miles on the Jeep.

The wheel bearing/hub had to be replaced as well. The alignment was off and could not be brought back in spec. After the dealership diagnosed it (taking measurements and what not) they said the strut was bent and needed to be replaced.

Re: Replacing strut (QD2)

I should specify this is QL2 not QD2. I have the air suspension.

Re: Replacing strut (QD2)

I am thinking of picking up the replacement strut from here.

Jeep Grand Cherokee 11 12 Front Air Lift Strut RH LH Set New | eBay

Any thoughts? He says it is OEM new in box and will do one shipped for $500.

Those are the correct parts (I cross-checked the part numbers). However, I wouldn't really do just one strut. The strut contains a shock as well as the air spring -- with the mileage on your vehicle, you're likely going to notice some odd handling characteristics if you have one brand new strut and one with a good number of miles on it because of the differing shock wear. I'd bite the bullet if you can and have them do both.

FYI that price on eBay is really good, if they are brand new.

Well, THAT's not what I want to hear.

I guess since the price for both on Ebay is less than the price for one at the dealership....but still, ugh.

Re: Replacing strut (QD2)

Talk with your dealer and see what they can do for you. You still have to have them installed and you will still need an alignment. Do not go cheap on the alignment. Who knows what other damage is there? You could have also damaged the diff etc. Usually going cheap on suspension parts and the install doesnt end in a good result. Again you need to have them both replaced.
