RER ipod cable length??

Anyone know how long the ipod cable is? It comes out from the storage bin below the radio just enough to put the ipod into the cup holder...

I'm wondering if perhaps it was tied off or restricted by the dealer to that length. I could use another 6" of cable and tried several dock extender cables but none of them seem to work. They cause a 'communication error' message.

Thanks!!

This is my 2 cents. I could be totally wrong. I don't have the RER, but I test drove several WK2's with the RER. I don't think the dealer has restricted its length. My understanding is that the cable you are talking about is so you can tuck away your iPod/iPhone/device out of sight and still have limited access to it. If you want to have a long cable you can connect one to the USB port on the face of the radio...

Re: RER ipod cable length??

It's just not that long. I leave my iPod in that lower console bin, but due to the nature of that cable (short, thick, not terribly pliable), there isn't room for much else in there. I find I never actually need to touch the iPod though; the only time I ever dink with it is when I remove it to load more music from my computer.

The USB port on the face of the radio does NOT provide iPod control; it's solely for loading media onto the internal hard drive.

Re: RER ipod cable length??

The total length of cable, including interior cable from the head unit to the jack, can be as long as 5 meters. I don't know what a "dock extender cable" is. You should be able to replace the OEM cable with one that has a USB jack on one end and an iPod connector on the other -- like the white cable that probably came with the iPod.

Re: RER ipod cable length??

A dock extender cable is basically an extension of the 30 pin ipod cable. One end is female and one end is male. It gave me an extra 2 feet of cable - a thinner, more flexible cable.. but for whatever reason, it causes communication errors and wont play anything.

The USB wont give control over the music.

Can it be the cable is clipped in the storage bin to keep it at that length??
The photos of the ipod connector kit I've seen all show the cable being rather lengthy.

Actually, it will. Modern iPods use the USB differential data lines for control/status and digital music.

Andrew, you don't understand how the RER interface works.

The iPod cable for the 730N RER is NOT, repeat, NOT, like that of the RHB or RHR. It does NOT plug into a USB jack. It uses its own special plug and cable; both included in the Overlands that are so equipped. The one USB plug on the face of the RER cannot be used to control an iPod; it is ONLY for uploading media files to the internal hard drive. You cannot even use it to play music files off a thumb drive as you can with the armrest USB port with the RHB and RHR.

So if you have the RER, you're stuck with the iPod cable, and USB is irrelevant for this purpose. If a dock extension cable won't work (beats me why it wouldn't), then you're left with that OEM cable unless somebody has come out with an aftermarket one that's longer/thinner/more pliable.

Renegade, the iPod cable is not that long. It plugs into the jack about halfway back into that bin, and if I would pull my iPod out it would only reach about six inches past the opening, tops. It is long enough for you to curl it around so you can leave the iPod in there, and there's just no need to touch the iPod once it is connected; just close the hatch and let it be.

I stand corrected... My only question is; why would you need the iPod/iPhone outside of the compartment? I thought it was designed to stay in it's cubbyhole.

That's exactly what I'm wondering. When it's plugged in, I don't believe you have any control via the iPod's own controls (you might, I've never tried it, but the screen just shows a uConnect splash screen and not the usual iPod menus). The entire design of the thing is for you to plug it in and not need to touch or even look at the device.

I have the exact unit also. Problem is if you do get an extension that works you'll probably have to have the door open on the console so the cable can extend out. I agree that it is one stiff cable. Maybe this is why with the upgrade to the newer design they went with the USB/iPod port in the armrest.

Re: RER ipod cable length??

To answer the question of why I want my iphone on a longer cable

First, if all you do is listen to your ipod library, yes the existing cable is fine. Plug in the phone/pod and tuck it into the bin.

Now, I use various streaming audio apps to channel the music from the iphone through the vehicles system just as it would a regular song from the library.

I listen to such apps as, TuneIn Radio, Shoutcast player, etc.. even Pandora (just to throw a name of something folks might know)... You have to change stations through the apps so I use a cup holder iphone mount in the cup holder near the bin to hold the phone, but due to the shortness of the cable the phone is held sideways or upside down.

Another reason, lets say I'm charging the phone and need to access it.. I cant really pick it up unless I unplug it.

Being that it is an iphone, my needs are probably greater than if it was a simple ipod that one can plug in and toss into the bin.

Re: RER ipod cable length??

Heres the kit http://www.justforjeeps.com/ipodwiring.html... click down on the installation instructions on the page and take a look at the image. A is the part of the cable that sticks out of the bin. B is the little grommet that holds the cable in place from moving. It appears the distance between A and B is 30cm... That seems about right.

The cable is obviously a lot longer and I wonder if the grommet can be moved to allow more slack from the cable... hmm.. something to ponder.
