Rodents love my engine bay

While camping this fall I discovered several pine cones hidden under my hood in various places with large amounts in each outer corner closest to the fire wall.

A few days ago I discovered a nest of lint, food and little turds on top of the engine cover.

Of all the vehicles I have owned, my Jeep is the only one that seems to attract these pesky rodents.

Is anyone else experiencing this and what solutions do you use, if any?

Re: Rodents love my engine bay

Whenever I pop the engine cover off either of my 5.7s I find acorns and stuff under there.. one of the Durango guys had to have the engine harness replaced on his WD because the critters chewed it up..

service advisor stated dodge would cancel warranty if I don't take care of problem is a discussion about it..

Rodents love my engine bay

I've heard dryer sheets or moth balls repel them. At our cottage we cut holes in old coffee cans just small enough for critters to get into, but not dogs or cats and put a little D-con in them. We place them around the perimeter of our cottage and shed and it has pretty much eradicated the population.

Mint Oil....it will also scare any spiders if you don't like them, too.

Oddly enough, I recently learned that new age vehicles utilize soy based wire insulation which leads to little critters being more inclined to eating wiring

Re: Rodents love my engine bay

I store a mustang for the winter and was told once by an experienced guy that Bounce dryer sheets repel rodents. He claimed that only Bounce brand seemed to work. I've used them for years now with the mustang and absolutely no issues. Obviously not going to work for a non stored vehicle, just thought I would throe it out there.

Re: Rodents love my engine bay

Used this on my acreage a few years ago......when we bought it, it had been uninhabited for a few months and the mice had moved in.

Started with 3...one in the garage...one downstairs....and one upstairs. A couple/few in each each night. Made a couple more and moved them to just outside each entrance.....caught between a few and a dozen in each for a couple nights...then it tapered off. Made some more.....now I think I had 12 of them....and started widening the perimeter around the house. Eventually made it to sheds and the barn...got my neighbors involved....and virtually eradicated the mouse population in our subdivision.
I had them 'permanently' installed in all the out buildings and moved a couple others around in 'maintenance' mode.

Don't want them to stink.......put a piece of the mouse poison ( the stuff that makes them dry up from the inside out) in the bottom of each pail.

As a side note.....same acreage......lots of stuff to burn so I made 3 BIG piles out back....had a fire ban in place...... put a couple blobs of peanut butter in some good spot.....and sat in a lawn chair with a pellet gun...oh, what fun!...... when I could finally burn there were still many mice living in the piles......they all ran out and probably froze to death.

Did I mention I hate mice?

Oh ya....those plug in ultrasonic mouse repellent things DO work. Just plug a couple in pointed towards the Jeep.

Re: Rodents love my engine bay

The Rat Zapper works well too ... a bit pricey but has a "fun" light on it that blinks when activated.

Amazon.com : Rat Zapper Classic RZC001 : Home Pest Control Traps : Patio, Lawn & Garden

Bunch of neighbors bought them after seeing how effective it was. The entire neighborhood was infested with chipmunks --- I know they are so cute, well until they are everywhere. I was new to the neighborhood and people told me that everyone kills them, even the kindly old lady next door (she'd even laugh about it, more like a gleeful cackle). After some reluctance I joined them and bought a Rat Zapper. The 5 gallon bucket 1/2 filled with water and covered in floating sunflower seeds with a 2x4 leading to the top was a tad cruel as the little critters would keep bobbing up for air until exhausted. Don't get me started on all of the groundhogs (very persistent animals) --- neighbor across the fence (his was an acerage in the county, we were in the city in a subdivision) would shot them once someone caught one in a cage. The deal was he'd shoot them if you dug the hole - he had a horse, donkey, etc. and the groundhogs would burrow which could cause the animals to get injured. When a neighbor caught a groundhog everyone outside would come look --- including the kindly old lady next door who couldn't wait to call the acreage guy with the 22. Eventually I'd trap the groundhogs (live traps) and put them in the back of my GC (cardboard underneath) and drive them to the cul-de-sac and go in circles a dozen times with the stereo blasting to disorient them and then take them a mile or two in the county to release them. Ah, fun times....fun times.

Re: Rodents love my engine bay

Rodents: they too perform a necessary function in the ecosystem.

Nevertheless; I've noticed that they like the engine bay in my JGC. Particularly: chipmunks like to hide acorns under the TIPM.

Every time I pop the hood, I take a look to make sure that things aren't chewed up in there, and I have applied the bounce dryer sheets IN the car in my attempt to deter them from nesting in the vehicle: seems to be working. I also store a couple cars in the winter: bounce dryer sheets in the interior is a big help (at least I think....)
