Re: roll away

Alright, before you start calling me out, I never said that I knew that had put in in park...I assumed I had put it in park, and told my insurance the same, and didn't even think to check after I got the car stopped. I just found it interesting that I saw this investigation report the day after I had this incident, so naturally I'm questioning my situation. Somebody on another thread mentioned that he thought the brake would apply if it was in drive and the door was opened, which obviously didn't happen in my case. I'm not making a complaint, I'm just going to follow and see what happens, if I can possibly use this to avoid having my rates go up, why wouldn't I try...it was my first claim in 14 years with this insurance company.

In all honestly I think that it will come down to user error based on a somewhat unintuitive shifting mechanism...exacerbated in my case by being a brand new owner getting used to that mechanism.

I'm calling user error. We all know that if you don't depress the brake enough, it won't trip the sensor and it won't go into (or out of) park. I've had this happen quite a few times.

Probably the same people that don't know where the hood release is or where their dipstick is.

Re: roll away

Yeah, let's call it a user error and implement a fix where they will not unlock the door unless you are in Park.

Wonder if this also happening in other Chrysler products where this shifter is being used.

Re: roll away

This is definitely 100% user error no doubt about it there are even warnings and chimes stating your car is not in park if you try hitting the start/stop button to shut the engine when in gear. I don't even think the motor turns off in that case.

I think this statement sums it up exactly.

We have all done it. In the end, the driver would have left the car with the chime sounding as the engine will not shut down unless in park.

It won't, I did it a couple of times when I first got it and was getting used to the shifter. I've always used the parking brake just to be sure. I could see it happening if someone doesn't shut off the engine. Lets say they realized they forgot something and just have to take a minute to get it and just leave the car running.

Re: roll away

The user error statement it may be however!!

ON 2 occasions I have reported to the dealer that the shift lever indication are different to the EVIC screen. Both times from Start, being in PARK have selected REV the vehicle did not go into Rev. So pulled it thru neutral to DRIVE, it stayed indicated in Park with the lever showing Drive. Reselected Park and all comes good.
I believe the vehicle actually stayed in Park during these JEEP GC moments but not sure as I did not release the foot brake whilst trying to sort it out and did not feel the tranny shift. Don't know but possible the reverse could happen?

Am concerned though that this ROLL AWAY issue is similar to that of the previous WK/WH model. It had a Recall with the transfer case finding it's way into neutral and running away.

Re: roll away

The shifter can be tricky, I've often tried to go from D to R while trying to do a quick 3 point turn, only to rev in N. But if I ever happen to try to turn the motor off in D or R, it will always tell me I'm not in P and refuse to turn off. So how does one get a parked GC in D or R with the motor off? Maybe it will turn off in N, I haven't tried that.

I always engage the park brake, but realised I wasn't pushing it far enough down at first, and was finding it would roll a few inches after turning off and releasing exiting the car.

Re: roll away

I'm betting that ALL of these events were caused by Human Error.

But the piece of $h!t shifter is partly at fault! You have to be SURE it is Actually in PARK!

I've done this a few times over the 6 months I've owned my 2015. I've placed it in PARK (or thought I did) only to discover that it had gone into Neutral.
Once it happened a second time, I started paying closer attention to CONFIRM it was in the Gear I wanted it to be in!

And if Jeep/Chrysler is somehow forced to "fix" this issue on the 2014/2015 models, it will serve them right! They should have done a LOT more testing before coming out with this crappy design!

Will it let you turn off the engine in Neutral?

I have no idea. Every time it happened to me, I noticed it when I released the brake pedal. I then quickly hit the brake again & ensured I put it into Park before turning off the engine.

Nope. If you press the ignition button in any position besides park the EVIC will display that the vehicle is not in park and remain running.
