roll away

Just saw on my local news a story that they are looking into a problem with 14 and 15 grand Cherokees for rolling away after parked! Anyone else here anything about this?

Never heard of the issue and I live in a large metro area where you see new Grand Cherokees by the truck load every drive.

Re: roll away

Here is the NHTSA web site description of its investigation into the transmission problems with the WK2. Just set your parking brake all the time and you'll be fine. I always do. Some of these complaints may be due to the driver not paying attention to whether the transmission is actually in park before they take their foot off the brake. It's not like a mechanical linkage, where you can push the lever as far as it will go and know the transmission is in park.

Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)

SUMMARY:

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 14 complaints (VOQs) alleging that after being placed in Park the subject vehicles have then rolled away from their parked position. The unintended motion has occurred with both the engine off and the engine running. ODI has also identified EWR field report data related to the alleged defect. The model year 2014 and 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles are equipped with an electronic gear selector (shift-by-wire system). The gear selection is made by pressing the shifter-paddle forward or backwards; the shifter does not move along a gate path as with conventional gear selectors. A Preliminary Evaluation has been opened to asses the scope, frequency, and safety-related consequence of the alleged defect. The VOQs associated with the opening of this investigation are: 10733158, 10730952, 10683556, 10679497, 10583366, 10725429, 10715401, 10711893, 10676998, 10668651, 10662619, 10662308, 10605865, and 10567538.

Re: roll away

This is probably the real reason they're changing the shifter for 2016.

Re: roll away

Hey mods, we have two threads going on the same topic here. Maybe they can be merged.

Re: roll away

This happened to me yesterday, I just assumed I accidentally put it in drive instead of park as I meant...car rolled forward when I exited and rolled into a fence post, already submitted an insurance claim...I will be following this closely...

And it was for sure in PARK? Not being an ass by any means but since I have the same vehicle (well different transmission since I have V8), I'm curious if this issue is infact mechanical or user error. Even though I am used to the shifter in my '14 and have no issues with it, I guess I can see someone not using it properly. I guess I could try it myself, but what happens if you do not put the shifter completely in park before getting out? Say you only do a couple clicks forward and it stops in reverse or neutral, then you push the power start button to turn the car off then get out? Is there a weird chime or message displayed? I know some people get out of the vehicle in a hurry and a chime or message on the dash might not even phase them.

It is a tad tricky to hit park sometimes. But I never leave the vehicle with the engine running so I usually catch it, and tend to use the parking brake as advised.

Hopefully we won't be faced with an interlock that automagically applies some sort of brakes when you have the shift lever in park.

Re: roll away

Final report already out: 99% of the roll away "incidences" occurred in Washington and Colorado...and occasionally California

oh god, there are quite a few threads on this already. Bet there will be another one soon...
