Roof carrier options for 2012 overland?

Hey guys, i just purchased a pre-owned 2012 Overland and i'm definitely loving it. I came from my 2000 limited and i'm truly excited. I've been nerding out a bit and wanting to make this vehicle more useful for our winter and summer activities. My wife and i love to travel and do a lot of hiking and beach trips.

Sorry if this has been fleshed out before so please forgive a newbie, but i was curious as to other GC owners their thoughts on extra storage. Roof bags, hitch carriers, cargo holders.. i'm not sure which way i should go.

We just got a dog so we will be traveling with him (golden retriever) so the extra room when we go on long trips and packing a lot will be much needed. I have looked at some roof bags from thule but it seems they aren't even water proof(and expensive). Curious everyone's thoughts on the subject.

TL: DR
Need more storage, travel lots
-we ski and snowboard, go to beach and hike
-want waterproof storage

I love my jeep

Congrats on your new ride!

I went with a hitch carrier for extra luggage capability while traveling. It has less impact on fuel economy than something up on the roof would and is easier to load and unload, IMHO.

I went with an all-aluminum product from Northern Tool.

Thanks for the reply Jim! that looks like a really good option. I guess i was somewhat hesitant on the hitch option because i was worried about weight stability with the basket being cantilevered like that. Maybe it's just me being dumb. Does yours seem sturdy or does it have some wobble? I was also steering away because A) i figured would block access to trunk, B) block back-up cam. You have any thoughts on these concerns? Oh, and i was also already considering purchasing a hitch mounted ski rack since we ski a lot and typically carry everyone's gear to the mountain.

I love the color on your summit. I also have the saddle leather interior and i get so many comments on how awesome it is.

Yes, it compromises the backup camera. Nature of the beast. Since you have a MY2012, you have the fipper glass and can still access things in the back of the jeep if you need to. No stability issues. The unit I purchased is very sturdy and stable...it's one of the reasons I chose to spend a little more, rather than get the lowest cost options. (I actually bought this while on vacation and assembled it in a hotel parking lot...)

I bought thse aftermarket crossbars for mine:
2011 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee OE Style Black Cross Bars w Keys | eBay

Surprisingly good quality. They look identical to my neighbor's Mopar parts. And I don't notice any wind noise.

I bought these same units, agree with the build quality. Unfortunately, I find them to noisy to leave on all the time, too bad cause that is what I wanted to do. Even flipped them around and it was worse that way, put them on right the first time. Any trick to installing these to minimize wind noise?
BOT, I got this bag and hitch from etrailer

Let me tell you, you can load it up with this setup, watertight to boot. You may find the carrier cheaper on Amazon. Overall, I like this setup, no noise, no loss of MPG, and if your car camping, you can use the empty rack on the back as a table like thingy.

I have mine installed as far apart from each other as possible, with the thicker side of the crossbars as the leading edge for both.
