Re: Sales - v6 vs hemi vs diesel?

Wait, Whoa. Am I reading this thread correctly. Are the diesel guys bashing the Hemi? So a chipped diesel will out-perform a stock Hemi, but a full bolt on's Hemi shouldnt have any issues with a chipped diesel... Catch my drift

lol no such thing. For the Hemi, you would need a nice cold air intake and some long tube headers just to start (possibly even new exhaust system). Your basically talking $2000+ for 30hp, far below the gains of a $300 diesel chip.

I'm not knocking the V8, I drove one and it's peppy. I just wouldn't be revving it high all the time sucking down fuel to get that performance. Would rather take the out of the hole everyday usable grunt of the diesel is all.

Re: Sales - v6 vs hemi vs diesel?

Just spent 30 minutes googl'ing for dyno verified gains and money spent. It appears the hemi needs a throttle body, intake, exhaust, a tuner for gains in the 25 to 30 hp range. That's 33 to 38 hp at the crank...certainly a noticably improvement. I'd do it...but it isn't cheap.

I'm not knocking the hemi or the pentastar, or hyping the diesel. The all have strengths. I'm only saying the diesel isn't the 120 lb weakling some, out of ignorance, are making it out to be. It has the broadest flattest powerband of the 3 and makes for a great daily driver while delivering exceptional range, economy, and towing charactoristics. Period.

Re: Sales - v6 vs hemi vs diesel?

I would be interested to know how many GC diesel owners are new to turbo diesels, and how many have had others in the past.

I had a landcruiser turbo diesel, it was slow and noisy. The GC CRD is a ferrari in comparison.

I can confirm the Hemi kicks ass at altitude, towing heavy loads, over long distances, in really cold temps.

Re: Sales - v6 vs hemi vs diesel?

1983 Chevy 6.2 Detroit Diesel
- no turbo, a real dog, uber reliable, 22 mpg, sold at 300k and still running strong.

1985 Mercedes 300SD
- turbo, bulletproof with 280k, slow, fairly quiet, 30 mpg, sitting in my driveway. Runs great.

2003 Excursion 4x4 7.3 Powerstroke
- upgraded turbo, injectors, transmission, 35" tires w/6" lift, 5" straight piped exhaust, 16 position chip. 20k lb hitch. My diesel "hotrod". Tows my 12k lb toyhauler. 21 mpg at 65 mph unloaded. A noisy uncivilized beast with my mods. I love it.

2014 GC Limited ORA2 Diesel
- Strong, quiet, civilized, clean, long range. My business vehicle for 30k/yr. of pure joy.

Lot of that has to do with many rental fleets are ordered with the small V6.

Re: Sales - v6 vs hemi vs diesel?

We received our 2014 ORA2 Limited Diesel with the tech last November. We've has a 1983 Suburban Diesel, a 2001 Suburban gasser 2500, a 2011 Acura MDX. Some observations:

Get the V6 if you're mostly driving shorter distances and don't tow much. Nice engine, but we didn't like it b/c it reminded us too much of the Acura we were getting rid of: nice around town, but not suited to towing over mountains.

Get the V8 if you like the power rush, want to tow effortlessly, and don't care about the cost of fuel AND the need to stop more often. The stopping more often was a deal breaker for us because in CA you're going to be driving further to get to fun than say, New England.

Get the Diesel if you want to tow, drive longer distances without stopping, and if you plan to keep the vehicle for a while. We love the fact that we cruised from Las Vegas to the SF bay area on one tank -- 28 MPG, over mountains (Tioga Pass). I personally love the torque, but that's a thing for me. I *hate* stopping for gas every 250 miles when I'm on a long distance cruise, and hitting 600+ miles on a tank was heaven for us. Again, YMMV.

We plan to keep ours for at least 10 years, so it's optioned up and very comfortable. That said, I have other cars that do other things better: a Volt to commute, a Miata for fun, and a CJ5 for serious offroad. If you're trying to do it all with one car you have to make more compromises.

The main take away should be this, though. You can't go wrong with any of the engines for the GC, just more right for you :-)
