I'm even more impressed after cranking some Icky Thump/White Stripes tonight. There is some nice tight bass and clean sound that pours out with no distortion at all. I'm not certain my 11 X was the same as the Overland back then but it had tweeters as well. I was able to stream Pandora for the first time even though it didn't display the title/artist on screen like it does via Bluetooth audio.

Smart man! The 8.4" isn't new by any means, only to Jeep. You have the 3/36 warranty plus Jeep customer care is known to make things right when presented the opportunity less a $100 deductible.

I wouldn't worry about the reliability of the display, all cars nowadays have a display, and a bigger one is no less reliable than a smaller one.

Most people don't realize, but shifters have not been physically mated to the transmission for years. The old shifter was just a switch as well, so the new one, while a different design, is really no different.

Remember linkage? Used to have to open the hood on my '61 Impala with the column mounted 3 speed manual and pry the linkage loose with a screwdriver occasionally.

But with today's technology, if the shifter quits the screwdriver won't help.

Instead, they have to provide more technology ... the roadside assistance button on the mirror.

My '61 BelAire had a screwdriver sitting in a hole in the radiator support, so it was always handy.

Thumbs up Re: Saw 1st 2014 Today ... NOT Impressed!

I have sat here and read just about all the posts in this thread.

There is no stopping progress....

The 2011 - 2013 WK design, to me, tugged at the emotions of anyone that thought WJ (1999 - 2004) was a nice looking Jeep it is evoluntionary in that sense. The steering wheel on the other hand harkens back to the days of the Cherokee before the airbag spoiling it. We all know the nostalgia of retro styled rides translates to moving units at the dealership.

I am a 2011 - 2013 owner I like the styling of the of it and other attributes, It served its purpose by bringing in owners of other luxury and near luxury brands and convinced them to take a jeep home with them.

Now for the 2014 - 2016 Styled Grand cherokee

If Chrylser is to remain relevant they have to replicate the same success that they did with the 2011 - 2013 by getting some of those people that would buy a luxury or near luxury import to come into to the jeep dealer and take home a new Jeep.

With what Chrysler is offering today it is almost standard fare these days with options and screens and drivetrains in comparison to other makes.

The refresh addresses most of the functional hiccups that the pre facelifted models have which is improved driveability and interior tech (infotainment).

I haven't driven any chrysler products with the 8 speed yet but I have driven some imports with 7/8 speed transmissions and I am sure that like 2014 owners are saying that the cars feel completely different to the previous model year.

On the electronics side The UCONNECT is very dated in the sense that the interface and functionality is very mediocre. Why does your telephone call get disconnected when you start the car if your received a call while parked listening to the radio? Why does your ipod have to re read when you restart the car under the same scenario. We can make all the excuses we want but the simple fact is that the interface between the head unit and the UCONNECT module was communicated between what was reserved for a CD changer or some similar device. The UCONNECT module is the weak point of the infotainment. system.

Both the versions are still very good vehicles and I am sure they will maintain their mass appeal.

Of course the fact that 2013's are being slashed does not help in the resale department of the prefacelifted models.

I will continue to mod and drive my 2012 for as long as it will let me but, I can't ignore the fact that 2014 has some compelling upsides to trading up to one.

I too have some quams with some of the styling decisions that Chrysler made with the front end but nothing that would severly bar me buying one if that was my decision.

Owning and driving and taking apart my WK2 lets me appreciate the changes for the better on the facelifted models with that said there is nothing that would not stop people that generally purchased vehicles used to be content with a pre owned prefacelifted WK2.

This is a jeep Owners forum and we are all here for the same reason to share the information as it relates to our Jeeps. It can be hard to separate our personal values and preferances in what we like and how strongly we feel about something when posting about something.

2014 owners continue to share those technical tidbits as you discover them becasue it is going to help some overwhelmed new owner or help someone deciding between getting a 2013 or 2014, and it will overall enrich the knowledge base that is contained within this site.

Re: Saw 1st 2014 Today ... NOT Impressed!

I think some very persuasive arguments have been presented on this thread about a number of the '14 changes and updates and the many differing views about their usefulness and desirability. One thing that seems to permeate the discussion on the board as a whole, is how busy the folks at JNAP are trying to keep up with the demand for these vehicles. In the final analysis, this is what will determine the wisdom of the designers and decision makers at Chrysler. And I must say, so far, it looks like they've hatched a real winner.

Re: Saw 1st 2014 Today ... NOT Impressed!

I saw my first 2014 in person this morning. I am guessing it was the Granite color.

Any reservations I had based on Internet photos -- they went out the window. It is a really, really nice looking vehicle. The "smile" that appears kind of cartoonish in photos, looks aggressive in person.

Re: Saw 1st 2014 Today ... NOT Impressed!

Just got back from the checking out a new 2014 limited. All the dealer had was a few limited models & a base Laredo. The interior changes like open pore wood & the larger nav screen are an improvement along with the 8 speed transmission. Also interior wise I didn't care for the CD player taking up the center console or loosing the storage space lost with the USB placement. As others have said the front end looks better in person than in pictures and while I prefer the older style front end that's not a deal breaker for me. To stop from rambling on I will simpy say I was impressed with the changes and may consider one in the future.

For the record, I believe it will. I think I read that if you lift up the panel at the back bottom of the center console there's a red strappy thing you pry up to manually put the tranny in neutral for towing.

Well here's my two pence worth (cents sorry!). I like them both equally for looks although have seen neither in the flesh! Coming over from UK late April to live in Denver and intend to buy new JGC Limited V6. I think the 2014 front end looks a bit more European which, unsurprisingly, I like but understand might be a reason why you guys don't!

Having read almost all of the posts on this thread and lots of others it seems that in pure driving terms it is the 8 speed tran that makes the real difference and the 2014 worthwhile. I guess the CRD is a biggie for a lot of you but I will just not be doing the miles to justify it.

Guess I will have to drive them both to judge but coming from a 7 speed Mercedes in UK I am thinking the 8 speed will tip the balance.
That and the fantastic deal James has arranged as a Denver Group buy at The Faricy Boys in Colorado Springs.

Whichever way I am really looking froward to spending a few years in the US and driving one of the real icons of the American lifestyle.

Best wishes to you all whichever way you go!

Chris

I read every post in this thread, and this one by far sums it all up perfectly. thanks!

I had a choice between a 2013 and 2014. I like both, both were upgrades from my 2010. I went with the 2013 based mostly on price, and have no regrets. To each their own.
