Score one for the trailer hitch

Just got rear ended by a woman driving a Honda CRV. My trailer hitch ate her bumper for lunch. Not a scratch on the Jeep.

Trailer hitches make great low speed bumpers.

Re: Score one for the trailer hitch

Sweet! :-) Be careful with these accidents because if you call the police or report the accident your scratch free perfect condition Jeep might all of a sudden have an accident on its record. Hopefully that's not the case for yours.

Re: Score one for the trailer hitch

I've thought about this before... don't really need a trailer hitch but it might come in handy in low speed rear end accidents.

My only concern would be that while it might prevent cosmetic damage, does it cause more "internal" damage (to the unibody frame) than if the bumper were to take the hit and spread the load?

I believe in a straight on rear end collision the trailer hitch assembly would be the first thing to get hit and take most of the impact anyway even if a hitch ball wasn't installed.

Re: Score one for the trailer hitch

If the hit is hard enough, I figure the trailer hitch is going to pop through the radiator of the other car and our bumpers will have plenty of opportunity to touch one another.

That's why I bought the Go Rhino step bumper that goes in the receiver!
