Sharing platform - What does it actually mean?

I was curious about our Jeep when it says that it shares platform with the Mercedes ML. What exactly is common between our WK2 and ML???. Which model of Mercedes ML are they talking about?

Just want to learn more about my Jeep.

thanks,
-Aiyer

Its the same basic chassis. With a little tweaking it can be shortened or lengthened, but the structural system and suspension are all basically similar. Allpar.com has a decent article on it.
