Re: Shifter Confusion killed Anton Yelchin!!!

2014 and 2015 owners should get the new 2016 shifter hardware not some shitty pointless software fix that will cripple the car in other ways.

It won't be long before someone blames the small letters on the 2016 shifter or that they don't physically line up with the shifter position like in the 11-13 shifter.

I got hit by a train since I kept pushing the shifter to "D" and it was actually in park and wouldn't allow me to drive away - it could be designed better so the letters physically line up with the shifter location!!!

I think you're on to something, I can see the lineup issue being an issue to some people.

Re: Shifter Confusion killed Anton Yelchin!!!

Perhaps I'm over thinking this...

However, since the vehicle knows whether or not you are in your seat by either
1) the seatbelt connection
2) pressure on the seat
3) perhaps both

They vehicle would NOT go into park simply when the door opened + not moving as long as the operator has been detected in his/her seat.

Alternatively, a two second delay would allow you to open door while creeping the vehicle, make short full stop and continue without jamming into park.

If door was open + vehicle had not been moving for two seconds it would go into park.

from a legal liability and human factor/"proof" design too many possibilities for "bad" results....one example, a common application for wanting door open and full op capability is holding door open while you lean out to look low and around the LR corner...doing this you un-weight the seat and sit on your left cheek...likely enought to defeat a "seat occupied sensor", etc, etc, etc....they r gonna take the NHTSA and lawyer proof route on this one, especially IF (IF) this proves to be in play in his death...

Re: Shifter Confusion killed Anton Yelchin!!!

It just occurred to me for the folks who like to go on trails and the like...the door probably opens all the time to check for obstacles and occasionally must un hook seatbelt to lean out of vehicle. Argh!

in that scenario, that's why you click the seat belt THEN get in and sit with it behind your back....of course, only for light off-roading with no roll chance but this is a JGC forum not a Wrangler forum...

Be nice if they put a temp override in uconnect for backing. Check a box which disables auto park until the next vehicle startup cycle. Not likely but it would have helped, the seat belt thing will work for many and does inject some sense into the auto park.

agree, if it's a feature that the operator must select then FCA should be "protected"...

Re: Shifter Confusion killed Anton Yelchin!!!

Along the lines of "nanny state" and stupid prevention: watching the news last night, a story of GMC putting a " check your back seat" alarm when you put your car in park. This is to prevent idiots from leaving their child in the car.

If you buy a Bugati, they could get away with a 'bad" shifter. A mass production car has to conform to the entire spectrum of consumers.

Al

P.s. I like the shifter on my '14 Limited and am 100% a parking brake guy.
