Re: Shifter confusion --- not just GC 14/15???

I had a problem with this shifter just the other weekend. I pulled into my garage, put it in park, pushed the button to shut the garage door, took my foot off the brake, and the Jeep started to back up because it was in reverse. I braked immediately and shifted into park. The point is it wasn't in park like I thought I put it in. This is after driving it for 7 months. So it was in reverse, not park, not neutral, but reverse. It just doesn't have the right feel.

Also on the subject to safety, it's extremely easy to knock the car out of drive without touching the side button on the shifter head while driving. I have no idea why this is the case, but giving the shifter a little knock can put the car in neutral while it's on the highway. I don't suggest anyone try this but it's obviously not a big plus. Needs to be addressed. Overall, I would take the shifting system off to Laredo but with an eight speed electronically controlled transmission this sophisticated… I don't think that's a possibility. With the death of this actor, who undoubtedly got out of his car in the middle of the night to open his front gate, I would imagine Chrysler will offer a solution pretty darn soon. I like those movies-what a tragedy.

Please no more sounds. This thing makes a ding for everything. It's the most annoying vehicle I have ever driven.

Agree, a tragic and unnecessary loss of life famous or not

My wife and i test drove the MY15 and MY16 in late January before any knowledge of shifter issue.
I could've gone either way and for a few thousand bucks would've considered the questionable MY14/15 shifter.

But the Mrs. was clearly more comfortable with the MY16 shifter and stated that she didn't like the MY15 shifter as it took a minute or two of explanation from our salesperson just 'how to operate'.

The MY16 needed ZERO explanation.

The ease of the new shifter was a major factor in our purchase. And with the kids driving it, we feel much better about having the updated/retro shifter.

Prayerfully

While I have had no issues with our 15 - we turn it off when exiting.....

There you go FCA - replace the shifter - problem solved..... here is your chance to respond while taking the higher road after this tragedy

On a side note I keep wondering when Ford is going to replace the exploding air bag in my 2013 Mustang. I got the recall notice over a year ago...

Shifter confusion --- not just GC 14/15???

Good question.

Is it a massive generalisation to think that Americans consider the foot brake as an emergency brake, used only occasionally. While Australians see it as a parking brake to be used all the time.

Well from the responses on the various threads about this issue Jesse, it appears that whilst some do, many don't and thus make excuses for why they don't. Unbelievable but true from where you and I stand being that we see it as part of responsible operation of a vehicle.

I've just never known anyone (driven with anyone) that does not engage the park brake. Not ever and I doubt you would have either.

Automotive News reported on these stats today.

In 2014, a U.S. study said nearly 100 people were killed and 2,000 injured annually from vehicles that rolled away between 2008 and 2011.

Re: Shifter confusion --- not just GC 14/15???

I don't think I need any more warnings for the vehicle not being in Park after I open the door. I had to test it out to see if I would miss something if I needed to Eject myself from the vehicle in under a split second. Not sure why, but thought I'd see.
Chime, Red ring and its tells me its not in Park.. As most Aussies do, we always put on the Park Brake before we leave a vehicle.
After two years I the wife and I have not had any issues with the selector. Is it different, yes but I like the ergonomic feel and I seem to be able to find every gear when required.
Anyway, it works for us so no complaints..

I do when I'm on a hill I tend not to when I'm on the flats. I think after this conversation I will use it 100% as I did with the handbrake in my previous manual tranny car.
