Re: Shifter Recall 2014/15 is SOFTWARE ONLY

Just to be clear for everyone .... (Would a dealer / service department know more than the Jeep representative??? I highly doubt it). No, the 2016 shifter is NOT going into the 2014/15 for this recall.

Here was my question via PM to the Jeep representative on this forum:

"Is the 14/15 JGC shifter recall just software or is there actual parts involved? Please clarify."

Here was the answer from Jeep:

"Hi Dan JGC,

This recall involves updating software. There is no new hardware to be installed.

Re: Shifter Recall 2014/15 is SOFTWARE ONLY

So I was only sharing what the owner of the dealer shared with me.

Anyway I just called the FCA 800 number on the recall notice - they mentioned that the shifter was updated on the 2016 model and that some earlier models do not alert the driver if the driver tries to exit without being in Park (ours DOES chime and puts a message up on the EVIC) - I was put on hold for a few minutes - call center associate said there would be a software update - they added my email as a notification method and said I would get an email when the update is available. Sounds good as we like the look of the 15 shifter. Just wonder though - when they wash my Jeep at the car wash they turn it off, leave it in neutral and run it thru the tunnel. If there is a software lock to park, I'm wondering how you would let it roll thru the tunnel without a driver on board?

I can share with you all an experience with the 14 and 15 RAM 2500 - over many months FCA had a number of different answers regarding a weld issue - everything from inspection to updating the frame. In the end some rigs were fitted with a new brace others had the front end dropped and the weld redone. From notice to repair the 800 center stated many variations for the repair. These repairs can change - it will depend on how the Feds and the oversight management rules as an acceptable repair in the end.

"The automaker also agrees to unprecedented oversight for the next three years, which includes hiring an independent monitor approved by NHTSA to assess, track and report the company’s recall performance.

“Fiat Chrysler’s pattern of poor performance put millions of its customers, and the driving public, at risk,” NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind said. “This action will provide relief to owners of defective vehicles, will help improve recall performance throughout the auto industry, and gives Fiat Chrysler the opportunity to embrace a proactive safety culture.”

My view - the shifter is fine as is - never even crossed our mind that it was an issue. My wife drove our daughters 15 on and off for months before we sold our 11 Overland and got the 15 Summit. So far the Summit has been flawless with the exception of the glass being flawed - which FCA took care of - they replaced all of our glass 3 weeks after we took deliver. We are fans.

The safety "problem" is for vehicles on/running and putting in neutral when off is an intentional (and sometimes necessary) act so theoretically their fix should not change this ability.

Re: Shifter Recall 2014/15 is SOFTWARE ONLY

FCA's recall guide on the NHTSA website says:

"“The vehicles also deliver warning chimes and alert messages if their driver-side doors are opened while their engines are still running and "PARK" is not engaged. However, investigation suggested these measures may be insufficient to deter some drivers from exiting their vehicles without selecting "PARK," so FCA US will enhance the warnings and transmission-shift strategy on these vehicles.”"

It also states it is for ALL MY14-15 JGC's.
