Shifter Recall

The only other thread I found on this was in a subtopic for eco-diesels so I apologize if this has been covered already.

I have a 15 and quite like the shifter, however I have been seeing posts on other sites that this recall is not just a software update but also hardware... Would they really switch out the shifter to the new one? That seems a little ridiculous no?

Maybe someone can shed some more light on it, Milous perhaps?

Re: Shifter Recall

Like you, I'm not having a problem with my '14 shifter, but could live with a software fail-safe, but would hate a hardware change. I'm keeping an eye here for definitive info about a recall. Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 - 2011-2016 Grand Cherokee Service Bulletins and Recalls

Shifter Recall 2014/15 is SOFTWARE ONLY

In case it hadn't been totally clarified before (and sorry if duplicate but there seems to be some confusion on threads), the shifter recall for the 2014/15 shifter is software only --- NO PARTS.

Here is the reply I got from Jeep....

"This recall involves updating software. There is no new hardware to be installed."

Re: Shifter Recall

Dan just posted this that it is just a software update, not hardware. This according to the conversation he had with a rep. Check out the thread: Shifter Recall 2014/15 is SOFTWARE ONLY

Appears to be a work in progress as isn't at wk2jeeps yet.

? Wonder what they are doing in the software?

Adding voice warnings when they see a door open with the shifter in reverse?
Adding a voice warning when they see the start/run switch pushed with the shifter in reverse? Or automagically setting it to park in that instance?

I merged both threads...no need to add two to several more existing threads on the "shifter"...

I got the recall notice today saying that they are working on a fix and I will be notified again later. Meanwhile, I'm to continue doing what I've been doing and make sure it's in park before I exit the vehicle with the engine running <duh>.

I would prefer a shifter with detents that lets you know where you are without looking and which would make it easier to rock the vehicle if it is stuck, but the fix they are apparently proposing is to reprogram the transmission to automatically enter park when the door is open. Don't know what would happen if you open the door while the vehicle is moving, such as when you might be backing near something or checking your wheel clearance on a drop-off while off-road. Personally, if that's the case, I'm going to pass on the recall and insist that my dealer not perform it.

Re: Shifter Recall 2014/15 is SOFTWARE ONLY

What I have heard is the software makes the warning chime louder, and will prevent the car from rolling if in neutral and the driver doors open. So essentially a bandaid...

Shifter Recall - My Info 5/21/2016
I came in for an oil change this morning and the service tech told me there is a service recall on the shifter but, according to his computer, the "components" or "parts" aren't available yet. But just wanted me to be aware. He's not sure what all is involved, but did say if it was a software issue it can be done immediately.

Again, just relaying what I was told to add to this thread. I asked what exactly did it say and he showed me the info on his screen.

Re: Shifter Recall 2014/15 is SOFTWARE ONLY

Had a friend try to buy a new 2015 - she was told all sales of 2015's are on sales hold till after the recall is completed. She was offered a large discount on a 2016. I called our dealer and they confirmed. While they have sold out all of their 2015 models they have heard most dealers are now putting the 2015's they have in storage. They also said that they were told it is a software and hardware update - a new shifter and bezel. So could they be replacing them with the 2016 shifter?

I'll believe what FCA said about it before I'd believe the dealer... and, without pics as proof it ain't happening.

Re: Shifter Recall 2014/15 is SOFTWARE ONLY

I got the recall notice today and it says nothing about the type of fix - except that it is being developed for implementation in the 4th quarter of 2016.
