Re: Shifter recall coming

Hopefully they can apply normal transmission updates to improve the shifting without doing this recall.

It doesn't just effect idiots. I am not an idiot. I have been driving for 45 years and never before did I have to look at the shifter or the dash to know what gear I was in. I could always tell by feel when the vehicle went into park or reverse. That is not always the case with my 2014 GC. It is not as intuitive as it could be. Hopefully a little tweaking by Chrysler can make things a little safer. Let's not call people idiots just because a piece of engineering was not thought out quite as well as it could have been.

Let's not decide who I should call idiots. I don't have to look at the shifter to see what gear I'm in. It's not hard at all, especially if you've been driving 45 gears. Surely you'd know how a gear shift functions. I seriously don't understand how people can't get it.

Re: Shifter recall coming

I've had a 2015 JGC for two months now and can say that while the shifter may be a bit touchy and I have myself, at first, overshot my intended gear selection a few times......I still like it. To me it only took a little more care and concentration to master. I've experienced zero events as those that prompted the recall.

I actually like the "slapstick" style shifter and am happy to hear that recall may just be a software mod. To me it looks good, is just the right size and gives me plenty of room for my coffee.... After 2,200 miles It's already become second nature to me to quickly glance at the instrument panel when I'm selecting park.

As some others have alluded to.... anybody who has trouble with this shifter should have their ability to competently pilot a modern automobile questioned. To me, I think all of the ubiquitous touch screen and information displays are far more of hazard to life and limb. How many people either rear ended or have been rear ended by someone who was distracted by the instrument panel displays and gadgetry.

Everyone's an idiot, just in different subjects..........
Yours is thinking that the shifter in the 2014/2015 GC is flawless........

Re: Shifter recall coming

I see and understand both sides of this. I just traded my 2014 Summit for a 2016 and love the new shifter. It took a while ,but my brain and reflexes finally adjusted to the 2014 shifter, but with the 2016, I now know which gear I'm in without thinking about it. I like it!

Funny part is that similar comments are coming from all drivers with shifting issues. Bottom line is that they are not paying attention what they are doing. No one cares what you are feeling. If you are behind the wheel you have to be 100% focused on what you are doing! The shifter does go into Drive and Park always (!!!) if you push it all the way. So, it is operator issue!
I think the recall should be free shifting school with free breakfast for all the drivers with old mechanical touch.

Re: Shifter recall coming

I've had my 2015 Overland about a month. I've had issues with the shifter overshooting and undershooting the gear I want, but I'm getting used to it.

Personally, I'd like to get rid of the need for the brake to be pressed when going from N>D, so when I come out of the automatic carwash, I don't have so much trouble getting out of the way. The mechanical shifter in the 2013 could do it without the brake.

You hope in vain. These software updates aren't modular. Each system (PCM, TCM) has a single software build. You get all the updates or nothing. So, your TCM will either get this patch or you can stay with the last version released before this patch was included in the build.

No, it does not. Sometimes it "fights back"... you can hold it as far forward as it will go mechanically and it will refuse to shift into park. I have held it forward for up to 5 seconds at a time when it gets uppity, pressing very hard just to prove a point. You have to let the shifter go and try again.

I agree. The few times that it has occurred may have been due to timings of events in the rush of the change but it does happen. The final crunch comes down to the idiot that decides to leave the vehicle before confirming it is in park and ignoring the 2 warnings !!!
