Re: Shifter recall coming

With the Ecodiesel at least there is no power at idle. I have a slight grade in front of my garage and it will roll forward when I have in reverse idling which is quite different than my previous JGC with the V8.

Re: Shifter recall coming

The real issue here isn't that "people are idiots" or "folks don't pay attention" so much as there is clearly an intuitive issue with that version of the shifter. Yes, some folks "get it", but way too many don't. That's why there's a recall. And it's not limited to the MY14-MY15 JGC, either...the recall includes other FCA vehicles where there was similar heavy evidence of issues and some of them for more than just the two years that JGC has been involved.

I'm glad they are planning on doing something to help address this. If it keeps even one person (including a child) from getting hurt or worse because a vehicle isn't in the "gear" that the operator thought it was because of the shifter characteristics, that's a good thing.

But the chances of Jeep screwing up something else is way higher than someone getting injured.

Re: Shifter recall coming

If your curious, this video shows how the BMW electronic shifter works. Somewhat similar to the GC, but there is a button to put it in park.

By voluntary, they mean that Fiat initiated the recall, and wasn't mandated by NHTSA.

the problem with that is someone will invent a new idiot. it's a viscous cycle.

this is a general statement, not specific to this topic per se.

Re: Shifter recall coming

Recalls and safety enhancements are part of the business.

My only question is how many of these exact same issues happened with vehicles that had the traditional shifter? Was there ANY ACTUAL INCREASE in issues on account of this shifter design (not just anecdotal). People put vehicles in the wrong gear and press the wrong pedal all the time - end up going through glass windows at convenience stores, through garage doors (just ask your local garage door installer as he'll have stories), etc.

The question in safety is what is the cost to alleviate the projected harm (we don't drive around in tanks as it is too expensive but would be very safe for the people inside)? Here it is just software designed to go above and beyond the existing warnings and alerts so not too costly as software updates are commonly done now on service visits anyway.

The cost of vehicles being driven by humans is enormous. Which it why self-driving vehicles will eventually win out (even if you love to drive) as it will dramatically reduce accidents (insurance costs for property damage, injury, death, administration costs of each accident and of course police time and resources for each accident and accident investigations, court time, etc.), make roads more efficient reducing the need for more lanes, improving traffic flow, allowing people to use their commute time more efficiently as they are chauffeured around, etc. etc. etc. The economics of self-driving vehicles will dramatically cut transportation costs and change people's behavior pretty quickly --- you can bet (or invest) on it!

This is true.

Well, if this is what happen to you guys then it looks like software freezes and does not shift the gears. It NEVER happen to me. There is two stage movement on the shifter - shallow to move between gears next to each other and deeper stage to jump all the way to PARK. It always works for me. But looks like for some people it depend on the other vehicle conditions there could be a software glitch to create the issue. This could be the real reason for the recall, but they are not telling us everything. No wonder why that quick they went back to the old style shifter. I still think that one PARK button on the top like in the BMW is better option and we could keep the fancy look of the shifter. BMW is using the same ZF so if they could make it work it should not be a brain surgery......
