Re: Shifter recall coming

About a month or so ago with all the discussion about the shifters, I paid attention to how I was using the shifter and realized I don't look at it or at the dash and do it all by feel including parallel parking, 3-point turns, etc. without any problems and hitting the correct gear every time. So for me it has become intuitive just like my shifter in the 2011 and prior years. So it can be done and I don't understand the comments about having to hold it in park, that it fights back, etc. etc. etc. as that has never been my experience at all.

With all of that said, I do welcome the safety enhancement for occasional drivers and valets. People make mistakes so why not make it more foolproof with a simple software update.

Stupidity? I don't think that is fair or reasonable. I have 13K miles on my Summit and have had this happen to me once. Was anxious to get going and was in the process of hopping out of the car when I noticed it was rolling.

My fault. Not my stupidity. Accidents happen and good design minimizes accidents. You got a safety on your gun? Is it because you are stupid? No, it is a good design feature to minimize accidents.

I won't rush out to update my Jeep, I have gotten used to the shortcomings of this shifter design. I do however warn everyone who drives my Jeep every time they take it out that the shifter has "Personality"

Re: Shifter recall coming

Its either going to be a good fix or a terrible one, there is no middle ground with Jeep. Either way, Im going to let someone else figure it out before I go rushing to my dealership.

No reason to let Jeep touch my vehicle unless it fixes a problem. Mine works well. I just have to pay attention. When Apple releases a fix it usually screws up something else and thats how I feel about Jeep.

Re: Shifter recall coming

As far back as September of 2013, Car & Driver's review of the 2014 Hemi 4x4 described "the eight-speed’s stubby shift lever" as "an annoying device that requires practice to operate with any sort of precision." (Clearly more idiots who have no business driving cars in the first place.)

Re: Shifter recall coming

here is the details ....

Back in January, we told you about a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation of rollaway complaints related to the 2014-2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the 2012-2014 Dodge Charger, and the 2012-2014 Chrysler 300. That investigation has now resulted in a recall of those models to fix a problem with their shifters, which has allowed some owners to exit their vehicles without putting them in "PARK".
The recall affects more than 1.1 million vehicles worldwide. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles says that 41 potentially related injuries have been reported.
The shifters seem to be confusing to some owners, because, as we previously explained, they rely on indicator lights, not the position of the shifter itself, to convey the gear of the vehicle. According to FCA, "The vehicles affected by this recall are equipped with electronic shift levers that return to the same position after each manipulation. Gear-selection is conveyed to the driver by multiple sets of indicator lights, not gear-selector position, and unless due care is taken, drivers may draw erroneous conclusions about the status of their vehicles."
The recall affects 811,586 vehicles registered in the U.S., in addition to 52,144 in Canada, 16,805 in Mexico, and 248,667 outside North America.
The fix for those vehicles involves implementing enhanced warnings for drivers and "a transmission-shift strategy to automatically prevent a vehicle from moving, under certain circumstances, even if the driver fails to select "PARK."
Owners will receive recall notifications by mail when repair service becomes available. In the meantime, FCA strongly encourages owners to apply the emergency brake and ensure that their vehicles are in "PARK" before exiting.
If you own one of these vehicles and have further questions, you're encouraged to contact the appropriate FCA customer care department. You can reach Chrysler at 800-247-9753, Dodge at 800-423-6343, and Jeep at 877-426-5337

I see it in American television and movies all the time - driver puts car in park, turns off, and gets out whilst the vehicle makes a slight jerk in the transmission slack. No park brake applied. Seriously I don't get it... even if you are stepping out of the vehicle to just pick up a spec of dust you still apply the park brake, it's like selecting a gear it's simply the way you drive a car...?!

Furthermore there's alarms that already go off if you open the door while in gear, can't believet Hats not sufficient.

Maybe it's all in the terminology. In the US, it seems to be often called an "Emergency brake". Here in Aus it is mostly called a "Park brake" or "Hand/Foot brake" (Hand/Foot depending on design).

There's some obvious differences in use according to the terminology.

I agree with this and that is what both me and my wife are doing as well. You put tranny in park, you aplly parking break and you turn off the engine and get out.

That being said I'm not going to rush to get this recall done but I think there is a software/hardware issue with the shifter. I think it happens very rarely but it IMHO it does not shift and people get out not checking the display if they are in P. With mechanical shifter it is not an issue as you don't have to check the display.

Amen...

Re: Shifter recall coming

I saw the latest FCA message somewhere today. Apparently they're trying to blame the drivers now.
Should've left the damn shifter mechanical like it was.

Because, right or wrong, the drivers are to blame for not being more conscious.

Shifter recall coming

Is there an official TSB number for this "voluntary recall." ?
