Shifter recall- unintended consequence that costs us $$$ now

My Summit ecodiesel was in the dealer last month, got towed in twice for no-start. While it was in the second time, the dealer performed the shifter recall without asking my permission, needless to say I wasn't thrilled.

Now the ultimate slap in the face... Since the shifter engages park as soon as the door is opened, my carwash charges a $4.00 upcharge for any '14+ GC because an employee has to sit in the car and ride through the car wash to keep the Jeep in neutral.

You'd think FCA would think of those things, but apparently they were in a hurry to get the recall out because of the Star Trek goof that ran over himself. Bet there will be another recall to fix this recall eventually.

That’s a nicely flippant way to refer to the death of someone. You seem to think your $4.00 is of greater value than Anton Yelchin’s life, good for you, you seem like a nice person.
You’re also wrong, the recall was released before his death, it was not rushed out in response to this, but all of the other cases of the vehicle rolling. There have been reports on this sight for years of car washes charging extra or not allowing Grand Cherokees in their system due to possible rolling issues. But don’t let facts get in the way of your huge financial loss.
Do your car a favour, get it hand washed, not some horrid auto wash that either does a piss poor job, or scratches the duco, or learn to wash it properly yourself.

On April 1, 1977 my girlfriend, now ex-wife, took my '76 Monte Carlo to the carwash. The attendant pulled the car onto the belt and left it running and apparently in gear. My car went through, hit the car that had gone through an was having the windows cleaned, veered of and out into traffic. $2,300 in damage. I would have been happy to cough up $4.

I remember the date because my boss answered the phone and she told him what happened. He was laughing when he transferred the call, thinking it was an April Fool's gag. Since then, I wash by hand year round.

Ya, have to agree with the other comments. It's an unfortunate circumstance that needs to be fixed... if when the door is opened and it goes to park saves lives then that's what needs to be done...

Everyone thought seat belts were super uncomfortable when they first came out but again it's a necessity to save lives.

Went to the hand car wash up the street --- they were $20, then $25 about two years ago and now charge $30 ($35 with the $5 tip) --- they do a very good job but getting a tad pricey. Anyway, went to drive my GC away after being washed and wouldn't move --- they engaged the parking brake, first time they have ever done that (maybe one of the guys there is a Star Trek fan).

Just leave the drivers seat belt buckle plugged in and it wont "autopark" easy fix and no wasted money or pull the manual park release lever and you can have it in neutral with the jeep off even many options for you.

I would never pay to have someone wash my car for me. Don't trust them and I have better ways to spend my money. I like my GC clean so I take to self car wash for $1.50 when I actually have to wash it or $.50 when I need to just rinse it off.

I live in a condo building on the beach... no place to wash it onsite. And the self-serve hand spray car washes around here are very very few and far between, I think it is an environmental thing to prevent runoff into the ocean and bay. Pretty much stuck with having others wash it....the upside is I get to see a bunch of fancy cars being hand washed too as I wait ... lots of RR's, Bentleys and high end sports cars around here.

My car wash did the same I found a different one. I like the extra safety feature. Especially considering the tragic circumstances. Kids everywhere in my neighborhood, to the point when this came about I started to engage the Emergency brake everytime and still do to avoid any potential injuries.

Like I said above no need to find a new car wash there is 2 options to put the jeep in neutral after the recall.

I don't like that fix at all. I know with GM you can refuse the recall and sign a waiver of some sort, does Chrysler do the same? I'll be sure if I ever have to bring my JGC in to a dealer to be explicit about NOT having the any recalls done.

I do a lot of reverse parking (nose of car facing entrance of parking space) bc I like parking my JGC in spaces that are next to curbs, to help prevent tight parking lot mishaps (door dings, fender benders), and I hate how the mirrors don't tilt straight down from their saved position. On my JGC they tilt down and inwards a bit so when I use them to reverse park, I'm usually not parallel to the curb, lol. So I like to just pop open the driver's door and look down and maneuver car that way. But I guess with this fix, I won't be able to do that anymore.

EDIT: I just remembered, I do have small seatbelt extenders I could just pop into the drivers seat belt buckle. But I still wouldn't want the recall performed on my JGC.

The seat belt extenders would work, but you can defiantly decline a recall we have had 2 SRT customers decline the S27 recall already.

Yeah, if they were going to retrofit the new shifter from the 2017 that would be one thing, but to just force it into park if the door is opened, that's annoying - even more so than the present shifter. Just pay attention to it and it's alright.

#20 ·
Unfortunately that all breaks down at the "pay attention" point, or we wouldn't be having this discussion.

Some countries actually require demonstrated ability to drive before you are allowed to endanger yourself or others. We just make you sit in DMV lines for a few hours and answer questions you can do without even reading the manual in most states if you already have a license from anywhere else.

Thank you, yours was definitely performed correctly im betting anyone's that does autopark with the seat belt plugged in possibly didnt get there IPC updated or the update failed mid way though and the tech didn't restart the flash.

Yes, we are in a sad decline folks!
When people are in such an effin' hurry to get anywhere and everywhere, to see what the latest "ding" on their phone says and send selfies and pics of whatever the hell they are doing at THAT moment!

We recently got rear ended in SWMBO's Kia by an idiot on a cell phone, looking at texts. He jumped out an yelled that it was my fault because I was going too fast!!

Figure THAT one out......

The good news is that he was insured and also got a ticket....the car goes in to the shop in a couple of weeks.

Is there a lock out for auto park above a certain speed? It makes it easy for someone to stop your jeep if the doors are unlocked by just opening a door.

2015 Jeep GC Overland 4wd Diesel
I believe it is 1.2 mph.

Imagine being caught up in a freak road rage incident and some wacko runs up to your car as your trying to pull away, pulls open your door and stops your jeep dead in its tracks! (granted your doors are unlocked to begin with)....That be some scary shit.

But if your seat belt is buckled than it wont autopark and you could drive away like any other car

Funny, I went to a car wash today and the high school kid couldn't figure out the shifter. I just clicked the seatbelt over the empty driver seat and it stayed in neutral. An easy fix.

...and the recall pre-dates the unfortunate accident that left that great actor dead. It wasn't released "because" of that event.
