Re: Shortage of WK2 panoramic sn roof?
A "supply" issue//Pano SR. That's rich...
Well, being close (enough) to the situation, I can say that Chrysler doing their "rich launch" where 70% of JGCs are equipped with the multipanel SR is really stretching the supply base. Original estimates at project award (to suppliers) indicated that Chrysler would purchase 80k of these multipanel SR per year. Suppliers will tool up for this capacity and purchase components to support this level (usually +15% for peak demand conditions).
What is really going on is something where Chrysler is asking suppliers to expand capacity on the multipanel SR. What is really frustrating is the way Chrysler makes suppliers feel guilty by not meeting demand that is beyond capacity and not considering the premium costs involved to do so (overtime, premium freight, etc).
So - it sounds to me like Chrysler (who makes a lot of margin with the multipanel SR) needs to re-consider the number of cars that will be equipped with this SR - and still make a decent margin on the vehicle. One may say that most vehicles to this point have been equipped with the multipanel SR, and in some cases - the end consumer may not have really cared either way if they had that option.
Is there a supply issue on the multipanel SR for the WK2? Nope, the Tier 1 supplier has met every order in production since SOP, and is working toward allowing Chrysler to order more by increasing capacity that will otherwise be idle in approximately 12-16 months.
