I wonder what the real failure rate is for these heads is? I am sure its higher that .05% as Chrysler stated. You would think that if they were all made incorrectly, they should all fail at some point? Are the odds still in favour of it not failing...who knows?

This has certainly poured cold water on picking up this vehicle.

Re: Should I back out of a deal for a 2012 GC Pentastar?

I have read somewhere that an aftermarket warranty company specifically provides a warranty for US cars entering Canada because it has become such a big business now since our economy is still good and cheap cars are to be had in the US.

Wow that is crazy, personally I would never own a Chrysler product without warranty.

Re: Should I back out of a deal for a 2012 GC Pentastar?

I have owned 3 other Chrysler products and never had a warranty claim. Two of them were U.S imports that had warranty which was voided as soon as it crossed the border (Liberty CRD & Ram Cummins 2500) both were deals that I would do over again. The Liberty actually had a 7 year bumper to bumper that was flushed down the drain. But..again, I didn't need it.

It would be intersting to see what percentage of owner's on this site have had their Pentastar head replaced. I read on another site that a family has four 2011-2012 Pentastar's and they have had no trouble. I guess it really comes down to the odds / percentages?

I had a quick conversation with a dealer up here that would sell a warranty, without getting in to details, I would be looking at $2500.00. The price to replace the one head was $1,800. Maybe it's best to just pay the bill if it goes. There's such a huge savings with the purchase price of the GC....this is what always pulls me back in

My guess would be that you are correct. They may not all faill but there will probably be some that fail at all different points depending on many factors. Things like how they are driven type of fuel, oil, temps they are driven in. Its hard to say but my guess would be that the number will be higher than .5 percent.

If you are saving $10K, and the potential repair is $1800, then I would pay the $2500 for the warranty (only $700 more than the potential repair) and call it "cheap" insurance for any other future issues that may arise. You still save $7500 over-all.

Is the locally-available warranty through Chrysler Canada or a third-party? Perhaps you can get a better price on-line (if the 2012 was built less than 12 months ago). Just throwing out ideas, as I am unfamiliar with the pitfalls of importing a vehicle.

Would Chrysler Canada cover any recall work for free if you bought in the US and imported into Canada?

I think they would, I am not 100% certain. By law they may have to?

I could ask the dealer to give me a break on the parts and labour to change the head. Maybe 20% off for two years?

Why not get the Hemi? There's $750 off if you get the Hemi engine now.

Because the Hemi uses oil and will be a $$$ nightmare down the road with the MDS system - bank on it.
